Just when you thought the action couldn’t get any more gripping on EastEnders, it did.
After the explosion at the Queen Vic, the people living in Albert Square struggled to survive.
Martin Fowler, portrayed by James Bye, found himself pinned beneath a heavy metallic framework, suffering the painful consequence of his lower limbs being severely compressed.
The emergency services arrived and started to make arrangements to get him out.
As they went about their tasks, Martin and Stacey (Lacey Turner) found opportunities to confess their feelings towards one another. In fact, Martin expressed his intention of marrying Stacey once he had been released.
Even amidst their busy schedule, they managed a light argument, yet the mood swiftly shifted as the EMTs began speaking in low, serious voices.
Stacey conversed with them, and it was apparent that if they removed the iron bar, Martin could go into shock and potentially not make it.
Martin understood the implication of their discussion, and they exchanged a last, poignant moment, as Martin confessed that he had always felt for Stacey.
With two final kisses, Stacey stepped back and allowed the emergency services to do their work.
Sadly, the worst happened, and by the end of the episode, Martin was dead on the floor.
As I bid farewell from EastEnders after a decade, it feels poignant – particularly on this momentous 40th anniversary night. Leaving such a significant show isn’t simple, but the timing seems just right. It’s humbling to depart with a tale of this grandeur behind me.
A big thank you goes out to every fan of the show – EastEnders wouldn’t be the same without your support – as well as the BBC and EastEnders team for giving me this role for so long. The fruit and vegetable vendor will always have a special place in my heart. Now it’s time to look ahead, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. Farewell Martin Fowler.
Chris Clenshaw, our Executive Producer, shared his feelings saying it’s very sad to see James leave after 10 years with us. Tonight’s live episode showcased an exceptional performance from James as Martin Fowler, a role that has won many hearts of the viewers and is sure to resonate deeply with those watching at home due to its endearing portrayal.
Regarding James’ departure from the show, we felt it necessary to provide Martin Fowler with a significant, dramatic plotline befitting his character. To end his time on the series in such an emotionally charged scenario, particularly during a live episode, is a truly bold move by the actor. I believe this moment will be forever etched into EastEnders’ legacy. I want to express my gratitude towards James for all he’s contributed to EastEnders. Even though we’ll all miss him at Elstree, he will continue to be part of the EastEnders family, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.
It’s clear that fans were deeply saddened by the turn of events, as one fan put it: “Seeing Stacey clutching Martin in that final scene has me in tears #eastenders #eelive #eastenders40.
Another added: “They can’t kill off Martin after he finally chose Stacey?!!!! #EastEnders.”
A third said: “Fantastic episode. Gutted about Martin tho #EELive.”
