The popular series, Dragon Ball, has undergone a resurgence in modern times. This revival isn’t just due to productions like Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but also with the debut of Dragon Ball Daima. Lately, a new chapter from the manga of Dragon Ball Super by the late creator Akira Toriyama has been released, focusing on Goten and Trunks in their current crime-fighting escapades. Recently, producer Akio Iyoku participated in an interview where he not only discussed how Dragon Ball Daima was a tribute to Dragon Ball GT, but also shared his thoughts on what he believes are the key elements that make Toriyama’s shonen story so engaging and successful.
In a recent discussion, Iyoku shared the reason behind Dragon Ball’s enduring popularity: “Action is the core of Dragon Ball’s success, which gives Toei Animation an edge. It’s challenging to ask them to switch gears and perform action scenes abruptly. The action sequences, including their execution, appear traditional yet are consistently evolving. I aim to create even more exceptional, unique action sequences that can’t be found elsewhere. Interestingly, there aren’t many works where characters can freely fly through the air. Aerial combat is difficult to depict, and it might be tough to produce. While there are numerous battle action series, they typically revolve around characters executing extraordinary techniques with their feet firmly on the ground. I believe Dragon Ball stands out because all its characters can fly.
The Appeal of Goku And Friends
In discussing the enduring appeal of Dragon Ball, Iyoku pointed to Dragon Ball Daimao as a striking illustration. He remarked, “The current Demon World is just one instance, but it’s all a fantastical realm, even though it bears the name ‘Earth.’ Other works might have elements closely resembling reality, such as leading a student’s life and acquiring immense power through battles. However, Dragon Ball constructs an entirely distinct world. Hearing about the Demon World this time left me in awe once more. The universe it creates includes the Demon World, the Heavenly World, and even Hell – quite different from works grounded in everyday experiences.
The producer explained, “Since this world is completely imagined and not grounded in reality, it offers plenty of room for the audience’s imagination. This intriguing aspect is what makes the story so captivating. While human characters are present, most inhabitants are alien, leading to unique perspectives and actions that differ from our own. The result is a sense of awe and an emotional stirring. What sets this world apart is its meticulous creation – it’s almost as if it exists independently. In fact, such fully imagined worlds are quite rare, even in the broader realm of entertainment. Having a recognizable foundation makes it easier to immerse oneself, so I’ve crafted it as a setting.
