Spider-Girl’s Shocking New Series Reveals Her Dark Past!

In this exciting new development, the captivating character known as Spider-Girl is embarking on her own standalone comic series for the first time. Originally conceived by writer Dan Slott and artist Michael Cho, Makawalu “Maka” Akana was introduced in issue #12 of Spider-Boy. Born with the unique ability to assimilate and mimic powers, this petite, pigtailed hero is a Hawaiian mutant. Initially serving as Bullseye’s sidekick known as Funhouse, Spider-Girl later assumed her spider alter ego. When Bullseye dispatched his young assistant to absorb the abilities of a Spider-related individual, they focused on Daredevil-trained Spider-Boy, otherwise known as Bailey Briggs.

Instead of replicating skills and thoughts, Maka creates distorted representations of individuals, similar to funhouse mirrors. To control these abilities effectively, she was tutored by Bullseye, the world’s most lethal assassin. However, during a competition in Madripoor, Bullseye turned traitor against his apprentice and left her behind. In her time of need, Maka found an ally in another super-gifted teen, Bailey.

Now, Maka is mimicking Spider-Boy for a second time with her own continuing storyline. The first issue of “Spider-Girl”, penned by Torunn Grønbekk (known for “Venom”) and new Marvel artist André Risso, branches out from the pages of Slott and Paco Medina’s “Spider-Boy” and will be available on newsstands starting June 11.

According to Marvel, the upcoming series delves into the character’s past, showcases the complete range of her mutant powers, and explores whether she can genuinely transform from a villain to a hero. Since Bullseye deceived Spider-Girl, she is now attempting to act as a hero. However, a confrontation with Vermin uncovers that one of Spider-Man’s arch-enemies has been following her trail. As a result, Spider-Girl must determine the villain’s intentions and predict who among their allies might try to eliminate her next.

Spider-Girl is an absolute hoot – full of fun, impish, and righteous spirit. Moving on from Bullseye, she’s embarking on a fresh start in New York City, exploring her new surroundings and using her Spider-Girl powers boldly yet innocently, as described by Grønbekk in a statement. She’s quick to dive into battles that others might hesitate over (even facing some of our favorite Spidey bad guys!), and her presence has certainly piqued the interest of the criminal underworld – though perhaps not for the reasons one might expect.

Grønbekk continued, “André Risso’s artwork is a visual feast, infusing the story with energy, action, and life, in a way that only comic books can.

The recent announcement signals the debut of a new Spider-Girl series, making it the first since Tom DeFalco’s Spider-Girl, Anya Corazón, concluded her eight-issue run back in 2010-2011. Originating from Marvel’s MC2 line in 1998, the original Spider-Girl centered around Mayday Parker, the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson-Parker from an alternate future. The initial series, penned by DeFalco and drawn by Pat Olliffe and Ron Frenz, ran for 100 issues between 1998 and 2006 before being rebooted as the Amazing Spider-Girl, which lasted for 30 issues in 2006.

Most recently, Mayday starred in two installments of “Spectacular Spider-Girl” from 2009 to 2011. Since then, she’s been featured in Slott’s “Spider-Verse” interconnected stories and the spinoff series “Edge of Spider-Verse,” playing a part in the sprawling Spider-verse community.
