DC’s Supergirl Gets a New Costume and Fresh Direction in Ongoing Series

DC’s Summer of Superman carries on with a new solo series shining the limelight on Supergirl, and it’s none other than the Powerful Maiden taking center stage! At ComicsPRO, DC has unveiled a fresh Supergirl series, written and illustrated by Sophie Campbell (Wet Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). This new series will see Supergirl receiving a stylish new costume designed by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, and she’ll be returning to her familiar turf – Midvale. Take a sneak peek at the upcoming series in the preview below!

Speaking about her work on Supergirl, Sophie Campbell shared, “I started out in the comic book world by creating and illustrating graphic novels. Working on Supergirl feels like going back to where my storytelling journey began. As for Kara Zor-El, I’ve always been inspired by the tales and vibrant costumes from the 70s, the 1984 movie, and the CW series – a show I was an avid fan of. These influences will play a role in shaping this Supergirl as we progress with the series.

In the latest installment, Supergirl uncovers a surprising truth: there’s another Supergirl safeguarding Midvale…something that logically shouldn’t be possible. To prevent this imposter from damaging not only her reputation but her existence itself, she must unmask the person behind the alias. You can read more about it in the official description provided below.

Kara Zor-El has consistently been a crucial figure in Metropolis’s Super-Family, but Campbell is leading Supergirl down a fresh path amidst familiar settings as she reconnects with her Midvale roots. However, going back to her hometown after years of absence brings its own difficulties: there’s another Supergirl present, safeguarding the town and rescuing the day. To learn if the genuine Supergirl can unmask the imposter and halt them before they seize her existence, readers will have to explore the first issue on May 14.

Regarding the upcoming costume design, it was Artgerm who crafted this fresh look, which will grace the primary cover by Campbell. Additionally, there’s a card stock and foil variant cover created by Artgerm as well. Other artists contributing variant covers include Bilquis Evely (from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), Pablo Villalobos, Joshua Middleton, and W. Scott Forbes.

Artgerm mentioned, “Being experienced in creating character designs and costumes for video games, I’m quite accustomed to this kind of work. When designing a new costume for Supergirl, I aimed to create something innovative yet faithful to the original. I chose a theme that embodied ‘fun and energetic, but powerful,’ and incorporated those elements into the design. I also revamped the chest symbol to give it a more dynamic feel. Sophie did an excellent job capturing the look, and I’m excited for people to see the final result.

Supergirl #1 hits comic stores on May 14th.
