Netflix has commissioned an eight-episode TV show set within the Extraction universe, with Lupin’s Omar Sy stepping up to play the main character instead of Chris Hemsworth. The series, produced by AGBO and overseen by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), will focus on a new mercenary figure who embarks on a perilous hostage rescue operation in Libya. This move represents another step by Netflix to extend one of its popular action franchises into the television realm, following the phenomenal success of the initial films featuring Hemsworth. Intriguingly, Netflix’s VP of Scripted Series, Peter Friedlander, hints that viewers can expect an adrenaline rush as they explore further depths in the Extraction universe.

The upcoming series will keep the trademark intense action of the franchise while discovering uncharted territories within the universe of Extraction. Amid conflicts between rival factions and lethal assassins, the show aims to delve further into the personal turmoil faced by its characters as they confront emotional hardships like pain, deceit, and life-threatening predicaments. AGBO Films, the production company founded by Joe and Anthony Russo, will serve as executive producers alongside Mazzara and original Extraction director Sam Hargrave. The Extraction series kicked off in 2020 featuring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary from Australia embarking on a risky operation to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian crime lord in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This film was based on the graphic novel City by Ande Parks and broke records as Netflix’s most-watched original production at the time, with approximately 99 million households tuning in within its first month. The 2023 sequel, Extraction 2, furthered Rake’s storyline with a rescue mission for a Georgian crime family, garnering positive reviews for its enlarged plot and daring action scenes, including an impressive 21-minute continuous shot that set new standards in action filmmaking. A third movie is currently being developed, with Hemsworth expected to reprise his role.

The French actor’s prominent role in Lupin played a key part in creating one of Netflix’s biggest global sensations, with the series being the most-watched non-English show on Netflix at the time of its release, drawing 76 million households within its first month. The show’s popularity has persisted across three critically acclaimed seasons, with its latest chapter amassing 50 million completed viewings by January 2024, highlighting Sy’s enduring allure to global audiences.
