Shortly after achieving success with one of the most terrifying films of 2024, filmmaker Osgood Perkins, known for his work on Longlegs, has returned with a highly anticipated new project entitled “The Monkey.
In this movie, Perkins works together with two individuals closely associated with the horror genre. One of them is renowned author Stephen King, whose short story formed the basis for the film, and James Wan, who produced the movie. Wan is known for creating the Saw, Insidious, and Conjuring series.
The movie deviates slightly from its genre compared to his prior work, focusing more on imaginative, gruesome kill sequences rather than gradually creating an ominous and suspenseful ambiance. However, both films share a notable similarity: they each feature striking finale scenes.
The story primarily focuses on twin brothers Hal and Bill, portrayed as children by Christian Convery and as adults by Theo James. Their adventures unfold around an ancient toy monkey they discover hidden away in their father’s storage, filled with dusty, forgotten items.
Not long after discovering it, a shocking string of homicides unfolds – a similar pattern emerging years later when the twins have grown apart as adults. This eventually forces an uncomfortable reconciliation between them in the closing scenes.
Ever watched that intriguing movie recently and found yourself yearning for a deeper understanding of its final moments? Dive into this write-up to get the lowdown on the profound conclusion in ‘The Monkey’.
The Monkey ending explained: What does the horse rider mean?
As more deaths occur, mature Hal delves into an investigation and unexpectedly uncovers a significant fact: it was indeed his sibling, Bill, behind the reemergence of the monkey.
It appears that Bill has been harboring a desire for vengeance since accusing Hal of their mother’s death long ago – he intends to eliminate Hal by repeatedly turning the key in the monkey mechanism.
To clarify from earlier in the movie, the key-turner cannot choose which resident’s death the monkey will enact; instead, the monkey makes that decision on its own. Consequently, whenever Bill turns the key, a local resident endures a grotesque and violent death, leading to an assortment of intricate and grisly fatalities.
Eventually, Hal, Bill, and Hal’s son Petey meet up again, particularly in Bill’s dangerously rigged hideout. They seem to discuss their differences, but tragically, the monkey, Petey, takes a life one last time as Bill meets an gruesome end when a bowling ball decapitates him.
After taking custody of the mischievous monkey, Hal and I acknowledge our newfound responsibilities, vowing never to repeat the chaos caused by turning its key in the past. As we depart the town, still grappling with the aftermath of those turbulent events, a spectral figure on horseback emerges amidst the wreckage – a chilling reminder of death itself.
Hal and the personification of death exchange a subtle acknowledgement, suggesting that the traveler has tacitly given him permission – implying they’ve temporarily evaded death.
One significant motif in the movie is that death and unexpected accidents lack order, often seeming unpredictable and impossible to prevent. This idea is powerfully conveyed through the film’s climactic scene where a bus filled with cheerleaders, casually sticking their heads out of the window, meets a tragic end when a van drives by and decapitates each one of them. What a shocking conclusion!

How does the end of The Monkey differ to the Stephen King story?

The film deviates significantly from its source material’s ending, despite sharing the same fundamental idea and recurring themes.
In the tale of King, Hal paddles his boat to the farthest reaches of a neighboring lake, attempting to discard the monkey by attaching stones to it as weight. Upon releasing it, he can still hear the distinct sound of the monkey and finds that his boat is deteriorating – forcing him to swim back to land.
In the final analysis, it’s revealed that a tragic event occurred, resulting in the deaths of numerous fish due to a monkey falling into the lake.
It’s worth noting that there’s a change in the character’s design compared to the original source. Instead of having cymbals in the book, the monkey in the movie is given a drum instead.
As stated by Perkins, the alteration was carried out due to Disney claiming copyright over a cymbal-banging monkey character following its prominent appearance in Toy Story 3.
According to what he shared with GamesRadar+, when he received his task, the producer mentioned casually that “Disney, due to Toy Story, actually owns the rights to cymbals.” As a result, cymbals were out of the question. He pondered, perhaps it could be a drum instead?
Limiting circumstances can often be transformed into advantages, especially in the world of filmmaking. If you don’t embrace this idea, then you might find yourself in a difficult situation! It reminds me of when I discovered that the drum is superior to cymbals. The drum is like a marching drum, adding a sense of anticipation with its ‘Drum roll, please!’ before an event unfolds. So, I’d like to express my gratitude to Disney for this discovery!
Does The Monkey have a post-credits scene?
The Monkey doesn’t typically have an extra scene shown after the credits like movies usually do, but if you choose to remain seated after the credits finish playing, there’s a quick surprise in store: a sneak peek at the trailer for Perkins’ upcoming horror movie, called Keeper.
2025 will see the debut of a movie, starring Tatiana Maslany, who is also prominent in “The Monkey.” Without a doubt, Perkins remains quite active!
