In response to allegations of challenging behavior by actor Harrison Ford during the filming of “Captain America: Brave New World,” director Julius Onah defended the veteran star in an interview with Variety. Discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Onah addressed rumors that depicted a contentious production environment, suggesting that Ford was difficult for crew members to work with. However, Onah shared his positive experience working alongside Ford, highlighting the actor’s impressive performance and dedication to the project. The director also emphasized the affection and regard the cast and crew hold for Ford.
Regarding any rumors or off-the-record discussions, I can’t comment. However, let me share my personal experience with Harrison. He was nothing short of a consummate professional. He takes his work very seriously and passionately. Our creative collaborations were intense at times, but always aimed at producing the best possible film. I believe Harrison delivered an outstanding performance in the movie. It was truly an honor to work alongside him. I learned so much from him, and the entire cast holds him in high esteem, along with the crew. This is my account of our filmmaking process on set, and it’s the truth as I experienced it.
In “Captain America: Brave New World”, it’s Ford who first appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stepping into the shoes previously filled by the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. The movie heavily promoted the character’s metamorphosis into Red Hulk and his confrontation with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Last year, Ford humorously commented that he joined the project because “it takes being an idiot for money”, but he praised his time on set highly.
Reflecting upon the upcoming release of “Brave New World,” I find myself intrigued by both its anticipated poor box office performance and the controversy that has arisen from behind-the-scenes accounts of its production. While the film has generated quite a stir due to costly reshoots, it’s the reports of tension on set caused by alleged difficult behavior from some stars – specifically, Ford being described as “one of the crankiest performers” I’ve encountered – that has particularly piqued my interest. The source suggests that high-profile egos may have contributed to a challenging atmosphere during filming.
In a visible manner, Ford appeared to welcome the idea of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Last year at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, he displayed enthusiasm, even “Hulking out” on stage, and expressed pride about being part of the film “Brave New World“. Ford was motivated to join the project after observing other actors enjoying the process of making Marvel blockbusters. While promoting the movie, Ford would not express any negativity, but based on his comments and Onah’s statement, there don’t seem to have been many (if any) problems during production. It’s important to note that conflicting accounts exist about whether Ford caused issues on set. In an attempt to clarify the situation, Onah has shared his perspective on the matter.
It’s uncertain whether we’ll see Reddick’s (Ford’s) character, Ross, reappear in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe project. The ending of Brave New World seems to have concluded Ross’ storyline, making it challenging to find a suitable place for him in an upcoming film or series. However, Ross’ influence could still be significant throughout the remainder of the Multiverse Saga; the formation of the Thunderbolts team appears to have been inspired by Ross’ ambition to revive the Avengers. If Ford doesn’t make a cameo in that movie, there’s a chance Ross might still be referenced.
