The mother of a hip-hop icon has left the world too soon.
On February 21st, the mother of the late rapper known as Notorious B.I.G., whose real name was Christopher Wallace, passed away at her home in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. This tragic news was confirmed by Monroe County coroner Thomas Yanac to TMZ. She was 72 years old.
The coroner noted that Voletta had been in hospice care, and had died of natural causes.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve attempted to gather more insights about Voletta’s passing from the Monroe County coroner and the Wallace family, but I’m still waiting for their response at this moment.
After the 1997 murder of her son (still an unsolved drive-by shooting), Voletta has spent her life preserving his memory and legacy. This involves setting up the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation, which focuses on giving back to the community through arts education programs. With over two decades of teaching experience in New York schools, she frequently reinterprets her son’s “B.I.G.” nickname (originally standing for “Business Instead of Game”), using it to advocate for “Books Instead of Guns.
Following the heartbreaking demise of her son, famously known as Biggie Smalls, Voletta shared that she found herself suddenly under the glare of public attention. Previously, she had dismissed the pre-existing public opinion about herself.
In her interview with the Pocono Record in 2003, she explained that they weren’t seeking an intelligent or a school-teacher mother; rather, they wanted someone who resembled a homeless person, or as she put it, “a bum.
Despite openly expressing her dislike for rap music and becoming angry when Biggie Smalls (B.I.G.) expressed his aspiration to become a rapper, Voletta acknowledged and respected her son’s artistic endeavors in the genre.
She shared with the Pocono Record that she didn’t enjoy it because she couldn’t understand what they were talking about, however, her son’s words, she knew them well. He could clearly express his story. I’ve never been fond of profanity, and I still am not, but I can comprehend what he was saying now.
I am grateful to be cherished by my grandchildren, T’yanna Wallace and C.J. Wallace, who are the offspring of my son Biggie with his former partner Jan Jackson and wife Faith Evans respectively.
The woman, aged 72, who hails from Jamaica, spent her early years with three other siblings before relocating to New York. In an interview with the Pocono Record, she fondly recalled her childhood as being both delightful and untainted. During her leisure hours, she took great pleasure in tending to her garden and frequently posted about her blooming flowers and diverse wildlife on social media. Apart from supporting her son’s music career, she also used these platforms to share motivational messages with her followers.
In a January 2024 Instagram post, she expressed that if there’s one thing life has shown her, it’s the importance of persevering and moving forward, regardless of obstacles, and also maintaining love within.
