Obsidian Grows Under Xbox

Under the umbrella of Xbox Game Studios, Obsidian Entertainment, renowned for crafting role-playing games such as the latest project Avowed, has experienced a substantial expansion in its capabilities.

According to the CEO of Obsidian, Feargus Urquhart, he discussed various topics during an interview with IGN on Friday.

As a devoted fan, I recall when we first introduced XGS and Xbox, our team was around 170-180 strong in the year 2018. Over the last five to six years, not only have we expanded our studio to approximately 285 talented individuals, but we’ve also forged strong partnerships with esteemed studios like Heavy Iron and Beamdog.

What is Obsidian Entertainment working on right now?

Under the umbrella of Xbox Game Studios, Obsidian Entertainment isn’t the sole studio that has experienced growth; other teams like Playground Games (known for developing Fable) have also established a third studio. Meanwhile, the team behind South of Midnight at Compulsion Games has seen significant expansion, increasing from approximately 40 developers to around 100 over the past few years.

At Obsidian Entertainment, as the studio expanded, they’ve aimed to maintain several active teams simultaneously, rather than dedicating everyone to a single project. While one larger team focused on releasing Avowed, smaller groups were nurturing the development of Grounded (a survival game) and Pentiment (a historical murder mystery title).

As a tech enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that our creative minds at Obsidian Entertainment aren’t slowing down this year! We’ve expanded our team and are diligently working towards delivering The Outer Worlds 2 in the latter half of 2025. Buckle up, fellow space explorers, an epic interstellar journey awaits!

By the time The Outer Worlds 2 is released, it’s likely that the studio will have chosen several new projects to work on. However, at this point, it remains unclear what these projects might entail. It’s possible we could get DLC packs or expansions for Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, but beyond those possibilities, Obsidian Entertainment may keep us guessing in the near future.

For now, if you haven’t given it a try, I strongly suggest diving into the world of Avowed. Its spellcasting battles are fantastic, and you’ll find hidden mysteries at every turn, as my coworker Zachary Boddy mentioned in their review of Avowed.

Currently, Avowed can be played on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC through Steam, the Xbox App, and Battle.net. Being an Xbox first-party game, it comes with the standard edition in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from launch day itself. The Premium Edition offers a digital soundtrack and additional skins for your characters. For comprehensive information about preordering Avowed, check out our preorder guide.
