The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Finally Gets a Max Release Date (And It’s Soon)

In recent times, “The Lord of The Rings” has been experiencing a resurgence, notably with “The Rings of Power” on Amazon being renewed for a third season due to its popularity. Additionally, there’s a new live-action production titled “Lord of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum” in development, overshadowing another potential film. Lastly, the long-awaited prequel, “The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim“, is finally coming to streaming platforms. Here’s what Middle Earth enthusiasts should know about its release date and where this prequel story will be available.

On Friday, February 28th at 8:00 PM Eastern time, “The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim” will air on MAX. Given that MAX is where Warner Bros. typically premieres its properties, it’s fitting that the anime film would end up there. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex”, this movie marks Middle Earth’s debut in the anime world. However, given the performance of the film at the box office, it seems uncertain if we’ll see more of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world in this medium for now.

What’s a War of The Rohirrim Anyway?

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, let me share with you my take on “The War of The Rohirrim,” a captivating movie that graced our screens last year. In this tale, which unfolds 183 years prior to the epic chronicles of the original trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” delves into the destiny of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the revered King of Rohan. Triggered by an unexpected onslaught from Wulf, a cunning and merciless Dunlending lord, who seeks vengeance for his father’s demise, Helm and his people are driven to make a valiant stand in the time-honored stronghold of Hornburg—a formidable fortress that would later become renowned as Helm’s Deep. As the situation grows dire, Héra, Helm’s daughter, must find the courage within herself to rally the resistance against an adversary determined to bring about their annihilation.

Regrettably, the animated adaptation of “The War of The Rohirrim” fell short of the financial success achieved by the live-action trilogy in a significant way. In its opening, the movie managed to earn just over $20 million USD globally, with less than half of that revenue generated in North America. Despite this modest box office performance, Warner Bros. remains committed to their plans for the Mordor storyline. However, no concrete decisions have been made regarding further anime installments in the beloved series.

Warner Bros’ Anime Investment

In the previous year, James Gibbons, President of Asia-Pacific at Warner Bros. Discovery, revealed that the studio was planning to invest significantly more in the anime sector in the forthcoming years. He mentioned that there would be an expansion of their projects to produce over ten series annually, making it intriguing to observe what new productions will emerge alongside titles such as the recent “The War of The Rohirrim” and “Suicide Squad Isekai.
