Captain America: Brave New World Director Addresses Sebastian Stan’s Cameo & Bucky’s MCU Future

In an exclusive chat with Variety, director Julius Onah from “Captain America: Brave New World” spilled the beans about Sebastian Stan’s surprise appearance in the movie. It turns out that our beloved Bucky Barnes, once known as the Winter Soldier, is now eyeing a political career by running for Congress! This scene not only harks back to Sam Wilson’s past but also sets the stage for intriguing future tales within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s persistent reinvention of established characters is on full display here, as they continue to redefine and expand the roles of their long-standing heroes. This latest twist in the MCU signals another transformative step in how they develop their iconic characters, with familiar faces stepping into fresh, unforeseen roles within this ever-growing universe.

In every version of the script, a scene referencing Sam’s past was inevitable, and there were multiple ways this could play out. Bucky has been present since the early drafts I worked on, although his role within the film varied slightly. This is what Onah shared with Variety.

In the course of production, it was disclosed that Bucky’s on-screen look underwent changes, popping up in different scenes before ultimately landing in its ideal position within the movie.

Onah clarified, ‘The question now is how can we find him in the most intriguing and unexpected ways?’ He went on to explain, ‘At certain instances, he appeared right at the start of the film. At other times, it was only at the very end. However, what resulted was a delightful surprise and a poignant moment that propels Sam’s story forward. I believe we managed to create something truly engaging, thrilling, and emotional.’

As a passionate film fan, I’m thrilled about the shift in Bucky’s political career that seems to be shaping up his character for the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie. Although director Onah cautioned, “Well, you know, I’m not privy to every detail happening in the MCU,” he hinted at this change being in line with Marvel’s larger narrative ambitions. In essence, the MCU is all about surprising and reinventing its characters, and Bucky’s character evolution mirrors this perfectly. He’s not just a former Hydra-controlled assassin anymore; he’s on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, aiming to break free from the mold we once knew him by. It seems Marvel is crafting an unforeseen path for Bucky, making his journey both intriguing and captivating.

When asked if Barnes might run for a New York City district, Onah replied, “Well, it’s not a far-fetched guess.

The cameo marks a notable shift for Barnes, who is typically depicted as a military figure and an assassin. However, his entry into politics hints at Marvel’s daring approach to explore established characters in unanticipated ways, especially as the Marvel Cinematic Universe broadens its storytelling horizons, moving beyond conventional superhero narratives.

In a new turn of events for Anthony Mackie’s character, Brave New World signifies his debut as Captain America on the big screen, extending the tale initiated in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This movie, premiered during the Valentine’s Day/Presidents’ Day weekend, finds Wilson delving into a mystery surrounding President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford.

Captain America: Brave New World is in theaters now. Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2nd.
