Sony’s Pricey PS5 Pro Is Now Being Outpaced by PS4 Pro Launch Aligned in the US

The mid-generation update from Sony, the PS5 Pro, had a launch in the U.S. comparable to that of its forerunner, the PS4 Pro, but recently, it’s lagging behind.

According to analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana, during his analysis of January 2025 sales results, there was a 15% decrease compared to the previous year. It’s important to mention that this year’s tracking period only lasted four weeks, contrasting with five weeks in 2024. This difference partly accounts for the decline observed.

Regarding the hypothetical PS5 Pro, he pointed out that it seems to be lagging behind the initial momentum of the PS4 Pro’s release. It’s important to note that the PS4 Pro was launched at $399.99, while the proposed price for the PS5 Pro is significantly higher at $699.99. Even considering inflation, this difference is quite substantial.

Nonetheless, it’s plausible that Sony anticipated such circumstances. The company has recently reported a record-breaking quarter financially, and shipments of PS5 have exceeded 75 million units. These figures are quite remarkable, more so when you take into account that the company seems to prioritize profits over sheer sales these days.

Although we don’t anticipate the PS5 Pro to surpass the sales of its previous version, we predict it will experience minor surge in demand around significant software updates. For instance, Monster Hunter Wilds could increase its sales later this month, and we might witness similar trends near major releases like Ghost of Yotei and notably, Grand Theft Auto 6.

As the generation progresses, it would be delightful if Sony could gradually reduce the cost of all their hardware. I’m hoping they can arrange some relevant discounts and sales during this year to make the PlayStation 5 Pro more budget-friendly.
