Recently, physical stores selling Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) products have been creating a stir due to issues with stock availability. Shortages of sets like Prismatic Evolutions and the re-release of Blooming Waters have left many retailers grappling with how to manage their trading card inventory. This has led to heated arguments among Costco customers over boxes and GameStop locations resorting to using paper signs to monitor their scarce stock of fresh releases. As a result, it’s been challenging for Pokémon TCG collectors at present. In an attempt to tackle the shortage of items on release days and entice customers to visit in person, GameStop has opted to cease taking any preorders for the Pokémon TCG.
Information about the cancellation of Pokemon TCG preorders at GameStop was initially posted on the Pokemon community page PokeBeach. According to a forum post, GameStop staff received an email indicating they would no longer allow customers to preorder any Pokemon TCG items, whether online or in-store. The reason given for this change is to increase store traffic, with the aim of fostering a stronger sense of community by attracting more walk-ins.
Through their official account on X, GameStop later validated the rumor by posting an announcement about discontinuing preorders. The primary justification for this move is to facilitate a smoother experience for fans upon release. Additionally, GameStop intends to provide free card protectors and sleeves for PSA grading submissions on launch days as an incentive for customers to shop in-store during major Pokemon TCG release days.
An announcement regarding Pokémon TCG

It’s no surprise that GameStop is struggling with less in-store traffic, but the recent store closures might not be the sole issue. The latest restock of Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) products, such as Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters sets, has sparked outrage among fans due to a shortage of stock. In many cases, stores ran out of these new items before they even opened for the day, leading customers to suspect that employees or resellers were buying up the stock ahead of customers. To manage this situation, GameStop announced it would delay sales until the official release date, aiming to stretch the limited supply further by preventing early claims on items.
Ongoing Pokemon TCG Shortages Pose Problems for Fans and Retailers
As an enthusiastic fan, I’m sharing that the recent GameStop move is part of their ongoing efforts to tackle the scarcity of Pokemon TCG products. Previously, they introduced a ‘two-per-customer’ policy for these items, announcing it on social media as a way to avoid confrontations reminiscent of those at Costco. However, this policy becomes ineffective when there aren’t even two items available, which seems to be the case with the latest restock.
Fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game (PTCG) remain disgruntled due to persistent shortages, making it difficult for them to obtain the latest releases. Consequently, these scarcities lead to inflated prices as resellers capitalize on the lack of supply. Unfortunately, this is not a novel predicament for PTCG enthusiasts; however, the extreme demand and underproduction of the Prismatic Evolutions set have intensified the problem.
Previously, The Pokemon Company announced they would reprint items from the Prismatic Collections. However, since releasing the following merchandise, there have been no updates about when these additional cards will become available. Given that new sets are scheduled for this year, it appears both GameStop and fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game are worried that shortages may persist. With long lines at GameStop during the last release, it’s uncertain if canceling preorders will boost in-store traffic, but it could encourage walk-in customers to obtain the Pokemon TCG stock – assuming GameStop has enough to begin with.
