The universe of Skybound’s Energon has brought about numerous alterations to its Transformers and G.I. Joe series, one notable change being in the G.I. Joe storyline. Fans who have followed the series know that a significant character like Baroness is not yet affiliated with either Destro or Cobra. She hasn’t had an encounter with Destro either, despite having a well-known romantic history with him in other narratives. In her temporary absence, another character has filled this role and formed a new powerful duo, which might disappoint and potentially upset longtime fans due to its unexpected nature.
The origins trace back to the Destro miniseries, where viewers witnessed Destro crossing paths with heiress Astoria Carlton-Ritz for the first time. They found immediate chemistry, but Destro was forced into hiding following an assassination attempt, narrowly escaping a close call with an assassin named Chameleon. As events unfolded, he discovered that Chameleon and Astoria were one and the same individual. By the end of the series, they had developed a romantic relationship.
In issue #4 of G.I. Joe, it’s made clear that things haven’t changed. During a mission where Stalker and Cover Girl were guarding the Brainwave Scanner, they encountered trouble with one of the main instigators being Chameleon. Later on, Chameleon met up with Destro after they were ordered to relocate to Destroy’s M.A.R.S. facility. This meeting left Destro quite agitated, and Chameleon tried to calm him down, explaining that he and Ripper had acted according to Destro’s instructions by retrieving the brainwave scanner, but they were later told to return to M.A.R.S.
In contrast to previous iterations of G.I. Joe, Destro and Baroness do not share a romantic relationship at present. This is due to several factors: firstly, Baroness is a member of the Joes, having been recruited by Duke. Secondly, Baroness has yet to have a one-on-one encounter with Destro in this particular universe, but that’s soon to be rectified.
In issue 4 of G.I. Joe, the entire squad gets captured and transported to the M.A.R.S. complex. Unfortunately for them, Cobra requires subjects for experiments. Duke suggests that the Joes are exactly where their enemies want them, but it remains unclear if this is actually beneficial or not. However, since everyone is now gathered in one place, there’s a chance Baroness and Destro might get to properly meet each other for the first time, potentially setting up a love triangle in upcoming editions.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the initial absence of romantic ties between Baroness and Destro might leave some fans feeling a tad disillusioned. However, should their eventual encounter introduce an intriguing dynamic between these characters instead, it could potentially offer a fresh and captivating twist to the storyline, making the wait all the more worthwhile.
