Following the debut of Obsidian Entertainment’s latest RPG title, Avowed, its director recently opened up about the game’s challenging production process in a recent interview. Initially unveiled in 2020, Avowed took five years to hit shelves, with the game undergoing a significant transformation from what was depicted in the initial teaser trailer – changes that appear to have been beneficial, as the game has garnered mostly favorable reviews. Nevertheless, according to director Carrie Patel, these shifts during development presented numerous obstacles.
In an interview with Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, Patel disclosed that the game Avowed faced several major hurdles during its creation process. Among these difficulties were two overhauls – the second of which led to Patel taking charge of the project. According to the Bloomberg article, the original idea for Avowed in 2018 encompassed a complete open-world setting and multiplayer features, with Schreier characterizing it as “a blend of Destiny and Skyrim”. Under Patel’s guidance, development shifted away from those particular aspects.
Avowed Was A Major Challenge For Obsidian, According To Director
Avowed Director Carrie Patel Reveals Development Struggles In A New Interview
According to an interview on Bloomberg, when Avowed was first unveiled in 2020, its development was in a critical state, leading to a reboot in January of the next year – which was actually its second reboot – and putting Patel in control.
The reboot, as mentioned in the interview, faced substantial difficulties leading to a change in approach. This change involved focusing more on the shared story aspects of the game similar to Pillars of Eternity, and abandoning the idea of a completely continuous open world. Instead, they chose to follow the model of distinct open areas, which are characteristic of the final product.
As a passionate gamer, I’m super hyped about The Outer Worlds 2, scheduled for release in 2025. In just seven years, Obsidian has churned out an impressive six games, and this one will be no exception. However, the challenges they face during the development of these big titles, as revealed by Patel’s interview with Bloomberg, are not to be underestimated. Yet, the struggles endured by the team behind Avowed seem to have been worth every bit of hard work.
After Launch, Avowed Proves To Be Worth The Effort
Avowed’s Long And Troubled Development Seems To Have (Mostly) Paid Off
Spiteful challenges that cropped up during the production phase for the game known as Avowed, it was ultimately launched to a predominantly favorable response. In fact, Kyle Gratton from Ebaster gave it a 9/10 in his review. Notably, the absence of an open world and the deep ties to the lore of Eora, the universe created by the Pillars of Eternity series, have garnered high praise from several critics.
Gratton states that “Avowed deliberately passed on offering a completely open world, which I believe is a good decision for it.” However, it’s important to note that not everyone has fully connected with Avowed, as other reviews have pointed out issues related to the game’s writing and lack of novelty.
Although the game hasn’t reached blockbuster status based on its Steam peak player count of approximately 18,000 (as displayed on SteamDB), it’s important to note that factors such as early access for Premium Edition users and Xbox Game Pass availability may have influenced these numbers. Interestingly, Obsidian Entertainment’s CEO, Patel, seems to imply that there might be plans for additional content or sequels for the game titled “Avowed“, suggesting, “Now that we’ve created this amazing world…[…]I would love to see us explore it further.“.
