God of War Remasters Could Be Coming to PS5 as Series Celebrates 20th Anniversary

In a month’s time, we’ll be marking the 20th anniversary of the release of God of War, the pioneering game in this renowned series, which was initially unveiled on the PlayStation 2 on March 22nd, 2005.

It’s highly likely that Sony will celebrate the event with some form of recognition, and there are those who think that ports of Kratos’ iconic Greek adventures might be just around the corner.

At present, you can only play God of War 3 Remastered on a PlayStation 5. The initial two releases for PlayStation 2 and their subsequent PSP versions, along with the PS3 remasters, are confined to their original systems.

On Bluesky, connected Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb implied that the God of War remaster rumors might have been slightly premature. Such events are more likely to occur nearer to the [20th anniversary].

Sony has several options for handling this situation: One possibility is to bring back the four missing games as a part of their PS2 and PSP emulation projects, enhancing them with high-definition resolution and save states. This would probably make them accessible through the PS Plus Premium subscription service.

As an alternative, they might gather all the titles in one go and launch a remastered set instead. Although Sony has faced criticism for releasing too many remakes recently, it’s logical to bring these classic games up-to-date so they can be played on current systems.

The point becomes even more valid when you take into account that God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, the free roguelike expansion for the most recent game, serves to link the stories of Kratos’ Greek and Norse adventures. Additionally, there have been whispers about a potential new God of War series installment focusing on a younger Kratos revisiting his past in Greece.

The sole point of consideration is: in what context does God of War: Ascension belong? To clarify, that game, including its multiplayer aspect, can still be accessed exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

Although certain aspects of the initial games might seem dated, they remain highly enjoyable when viewed through a contemporary lens. If these games are ever remastered, we’d eagerly endorse them as worthwhile purchases at an appropriate cost.

Instead of asking directly, how about inviting a discussion by saying: “If you could pick up any classic God of War game for your PlayStation 5, which one would it be and why?” And as a fun reference to the series, you can add: “Just remember, Helios’ head is up there!
