Born Again” promises a grittier and more violent take on Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) as he confronts his old adversary, the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). Contrary to some rumors, this revival was not originally intended to be a comedy; instead, it has been reimagined to align with its title “Born Again”. The series’ showrunner, Dario Scardapane, who previously worked on “Marvel’s The Punisher”, is clarifying these misconceptions.
According to Scardapane, the events unfolded quite recently, and based on his knowledge, none of what Liefeld said appears accurate. When asked about Liefeld’s claim that the show was a comedy and that Silvera essentially reshot almost all episodes, this is what Scardapane told ComicBook.
According to Scardapane, Phil excelled at creating our action sequences, however he didn’t oversee the episodes, and it seems that the producers hadn’t intended it as a comedy. Upon joining and experimenting, Scardapane found that what was presented wasn’t comedic.
As executive producer Sana Amanat stated, the Daredevil series reboot, titled Born Again, maintained certain elements from head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman’s original concept. However, in terms of changing the narrative direction, “We incorporated some extra aspects to tie it into the new storyline version. But to me, Phil’s approach felt quite dramatic.
As a die-hard Daredevil fan, I’ve always been eager to discuss the adaptation of this iconic character. Previously, Scardapane clarified to SFX Magazine that the older version had some impressive aspects, but it didn’t align with the unique identity we’ve come to expect from our beloved series. In essence, initial reports described Ord and Corman’s original take as a legal procedural, which seemed miles away from the gripping Netflix saga, causing a bit of confusion about whether Born Again was intended as a soft reboot or a continuation of the storyline.
During the revamp, Scardapane blended pre-existing footage with fresh scenes and episodes helmed by directing duo Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (known for Marvel’s Moon Knight and Loki season 2), Michael Cuesta (from Homeland), Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Lovecraft Country), and David Boyd (The Walking Dead). The Kevin Feige-produced Daredevil: Born Again boasts the presence of Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, Ayelet Zurer, and Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle/the Punisher.
The two-episode premiere airs Tuesday, March 4 on Disney+.
