Avowed Could Be Followed Up By Pillars Of Eternity Tactics At Obsidian

Summary

  • Pillars of Eternity series is getting attention because of Avowed.
  • Obsidian Entertainment and Josh Sawyer are considering a Pillars: Tactics game.
  • The success of Avowed could help get a Pillars: Tactics game greenlit.

The launch of Avowed has brought renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity series, a critically acclaimed CRPG series that created the world of Eora, which is also the setting for Avowed. This CRPG series is among the best creations within its subgenre due to its popularity and success. The positive commercial response and critical reception towards Avowed suggests there could be an interest at Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Xbox to develop more games set in Eora.

Josh Sawyer, the director behind Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, has again expressed the team’s ambition to develop a strategy-focused Pillars of Eternity game (kudos to PC Gamer for catching that). In a recent charity stream for Avowed, a project Sawyer wasn’t directly involved with, he discussed the potential creation of a Pillars: Tactics title.

Eora Renaissance

Sawyer mentioned that Pillars: Tactics is something both fans and studio members eagerly anticipate due to their fondness for tactics games. However, the challenge lies in determining the project’s scale – factors such as the number of people involved, the visual quality aimed for, and the overall size of the project need careful consideration.

He goes on to clarify that the studio needs to determine a scale for Pillars: Tactics that allows it to generate revenue. “Fans of tactics games are extremely passionate,” he notes, “but their number is not colossal.” This means that while you can count on attracting fans of the tactics genre, even if every single one of them purchased Pillars: Tactics, it wouldn’t warrant a large triple-A budget.

It’s possible that Sawyer might be hesitant to work on a project with a smaller budget, given his earlier aspirations for Pillars of Eternity 3, which he wanted to develop with a budget similar to Baldur’s Gate 3 ($100 million). This is approximately $95 million more than what it cost to produce Deadfire. After working on Pillars, Sawyer moved on to Pentiment, a project he led at Obsidian, which was developed by a small team of history enthusiasts.

It’s not the first instance where Sawyer has hinted at Obsidian’s eagerness to develop Pillars: Tactics. Given the potential success of Avowed, it might increase the likelihood that this project gets approved.
