As a movie critic eagerly awaiting the latest installment, I can’t contain my excitement as the third season of Reacher graces our screens, with the initial three episodes debuting on Prime Video this past Thursday. The anticipation has been palpable for quite some time now, fueled largely by the fact that this new season is adapted from Lee Child’s novel, The Persuader – a fan favorite and highly acclaimed title in the Jack Reacher book series.
The first episode began by closely mirroring a lengthy sequence from the novel “Persuader,” paving the way for a series that might closely adhere to the book’s narrative. But after this initial scene, “Reacher” introduced a significant deviation from the source material – the show lacks one of the most prominent characters found in the entire book.
In the story titled “Persuader”, Jack Reacher orchestrates a daring rescue of Richard Beck, a young man from a suspected crime boss, Zachary Beck’s family, to gain access to the father and locate a dangerous accomplice. Once inside the Beck household, posing as one of their security personnel, Reacher becomes acquainted with Richard’s mother, Elizabeth. She is herself a captive in this situation, forced to live secluded and frequently subjected to violence at the hands of Paulie, an intimidating individual who resides on the property and works for Beck’s employer.
In reality, it’s Elizabeth who uncovers Reacher’s undercover status. Instead of passing on this knowledge to her spouse, she chooses to confront Reacher directly, essentially appealing to him for aid in dismantling the entire operation. As the story progresses, they gradually build trust in one another and occasionally collaborate to advance the case, despite Elizabeth’s internal struggles regarding her husband’s involvement in the situation.
In Season 3 of “Reacher,” I found myself immersed in a narrative that, while similar to its predecessors, presented some intriguing differences. The character of Elizabeth is noticeably absent, a choice that sets the stage for Richard’s storyline to evolve in unique ways. Early on, it’s revealed that Richard’s mother passed away before the events depicted in the series. This tragic backstory paves the way for Richard to shoulder a significant portion of his mother’s journey from the books, effectively merging two characters into one captivating character on screen.
In the novel “Persuader,” though Elizabeth is a remarkable character, it might serve the “Reacher” series well if she were not included. Richard, being a competent partner for Reacher, can easily fill her role as an ally. The omission of Elizabeth could potentially address one of the main problems in the book.
In the novel “Persuader,” there’s a subplot focusing on Zachary and Richard’s relationship, suggesting that Zachary yearns to improve himself as a man and father, given the circumstances surrounding his business involvement. Occasionally, the narrative portrays Zachary as a figure of sympathy, as he was coerced into a role he didn’t desire. Moreover, it becomes clear that his son holds significant importance in Zachary’s life.
Occasionally, such moments are sparse, but they don’t fully convey the emotional resonance intended by the narrative. The storyline involving Elizabeth tends to take a backseat, making it hard for viewers to truly engage with the bond between Zachary and Richard. By eliminating Elizabeth from the plot, the writers can bring the complex father-son relationship to the center stage, allowing Richard to confront the repercussions of Zachary’s actions directly. This change in focus highlights what was previously one of the most captivating aspects of the story, making it more prominent and compelling.
As we move forward into Season 3, it’s unclear how events will unfold, but focusing on developing Richard and Zachary’s relationship was undoubtedly a wise decision by the Reacher creative team while adapting Persuader. There’s no question that Elizabeth suffered a tragic fate, but in the end, leaving her out might turn out to be beneficial.
The first three episodes of Reacher Season 3 are now streaming on Prime Video.
