James Gunn Denies Zack Snyder Meeting Was About a DC Return for Filmmaker

James Gunn advises fans not to delve too deeply into his recent picture with Zack Snyder. Being a DC film enthusiast has been quite challenging over the past decade and a half, particularly with movies. After Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning “Dark Knight Trilogy,” DC aimed to reimagine Superman in a similar manner as Batman. Working together, Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder established the starting point for a new universe with “Man of Steel.” Despite the film’s divisive nature due to its grim narrative and high death toll, it was commercially successful enough for Warner Bros. to consider expanding the universe with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The movie in question sparked significant controversy and sparked widespread anxiety at Warner Bros. Unfortunately, by the time it hit theaters, adjustments to the course of the series had already been set as Justice League was already in production shortly after the release of Batman v Superman. Despite Zack Snyder’s initial plans for a lighter tone, Warner Bros. began to worry about the direction of the franchise. Sadly, personal tragedy led Snyder to step away from the project during post-production, with Joss Whedon stepping in to handle reshoots and editing instead. The end result, however, was not the vision that Snyder originally intended, and it ultimately turned out to be a major flop.

The DC universe ultimately disintegrated following a string of flops due to inconsistent creative direction. The question remained: would it continue Snyder’s narrative, retain the same actors, or chart a new course? Post-Snyder, there was uncertainty about the future. Later on, DC brought in James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, to straighten things out. His plan was to start fresh with Superman as the first film, essentially rebooting the entire series. However, some fans still yearn for Zack Snyder’s vision to be fully realized, possibly through another Justice League movie or two.

Zack Snyder Isn’t Making a DC Movie for James Gunn

For quite some time, it appeared unlikely that Zack Snyder would return to a DC project, but recently James Gunn shared a photo with him which sparked excitement among DC fans. At a recent DC Studios gathering, ComicBook asked Gunn if there was any significance to their meeting. Gunn clarified that they weren’t discussing a DC project for Snyder; instead, they were simply catching up and found it amusing to post a picture of themselves together.

According to Gunn, he was simply chatting with Zack in a friendly manner. Essentially, they were just spending time together and the idea of taking a picture came up. They both knew what they were doing and found it amusing. In essence, that’s all there is to it.

When queried about whether Gunn displayed an initial version of Superman to Snyder, Gunn pointed out that their encounters were brief and thus he didn’t share with him the upcoming DC movie.

James Gunn and Zack Snyder have been friends for a long time, even before they were both part of the DC universe. In fact, Gunn wrote the script for one of Snyder’s movies, “Dawn of the Dead.” Over the years, it appears their friendship has remained strong. As for Snyder’s potential return to the DC universe, only time will tell. Some people thought “The Snyder Cut” would never become a reality, but it did. However, it seems unlikely that another movie within Snyder’s own universe will be made, considering everyone has moved on and Gunn’s universe is now in full motion, rather than just an idea on paper.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’ve often pondered about the idea of Zack Snyder helming ‘The Authority’, one of the DC films on James Gunn’s roster. At present, no director has been announced for this project, but it seems that Snyder isn’t in the running as of now. Interestingly enough, he’s currently prepping his next film with Netflix. All this talk between James Gunn and Zack Snyder might just be a clever game of hinting and playful banter aimed at us fans.
