240 Chrome Tabs Create a Mind-Blowing Version of Pong Exclusive to macOS!

If the topic of gaming within a browser arises, it’s common to assume either streaming games through cloud services like Xbox Game Pass or playing online games on a webpage. However, imagine a scenario where the browser itself transforms into a game platform. That’s exactly what Faviconic does!

The description on Faviconic’s GitHub page explains that this tool allows games to be played directly from your tab bar. A demonstration video on the page shows Pong being played across 240 browser tabs, with the ball and paddles appearing within a single webpage. As the ball moves into different opened tabs, the paddles adjust accordingly.

The end result is technically impressive, albeit not that useful.

The idea for this project came to life when the developer chanced upon “BrowserBoundBird”, a version of Flappy Bird running inside a web browser. This project’s creator, Nolen Royalty, made the source code available on GitHub and elaborated on its development process in a blog post.

Regrettably, Faviconic can’t be utilized on PCs as it functions exclusively with the macOS variant of Google Chrome. This restriction arises because Faviconic relies on AppleScript.

In simpler terms, Royalty described AppleScript as “a strong and peculiar method for managing software on a Mac. It’s almost like writing in English, but it’s quite wordy and rigorous, so you often find yourself composing Python code with many additional phrases.

However, this setup proved perfect for my needs. I devised a script that launched eight Chrome browsers, each containing thirty tabs. I meticulously arranged these Chrome windows in a neat stack, one atop the other.

In simpler terms, the developer encountered issues like swiftly modifying small images (favicons) that signify a website, ensuring each tab recognizes its location, and finding a method to update tabs. The task included meticulous work, including measuring the distance in pixels between the left edge of Chrome and the first favicon.

Unfortunately, I’m unable to join the game since I only possess a PC. However, gamers using macOS get to boast about an exclusive Apple game title.
