Dauntless Shutting Down for Good Following Layoffs

In early 2025, the game developer Phoenix Labs decided to let go of most of their staff, leaving the fate of “Dauntless,” the free-to-play monster hunting game that debuted in 2019, uncertain. Some worried that trouble was on the horizon for this title. Those concerns have now been validated as Phoenix Labs has announced they will be closing down “Dauntless” completely by the end of spring this year.

Hey fellow gamers! Just wanted to share some sad news about my favorite game, Dauntless. I’ve been slaying Behemoths left and right, but it looks like our journey together is coming to an end. According to the official Dauntless X account, the action RPG will be wrapping up on May 29th. After that date, not only will development come to a halt, but the game servers will shut down, making it impossible for us to continue our epic quests in the future. Phoenix Labs also mentioned they won’t be releasing any more updates or content drops after this time. So, let’s cherish these remaining moments and make every hunt count! 💔

On May 29, 2025, at 11:45 PM Pacific Standard Time, the game Dauntless will cease operation. From that date forward, no new content or updates will be provided for Dauntless. We appreciate your part in the Dauntless adventure.

Despite the fact that Dauntless eventually reaching its conclusion is disappointing, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. When Phoenix Labs first launched the game in beta back in 2018, it aimed to offer a free-to-play option comparable to Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. Initially, Dauntless was successful and maintained popularity for several years as fresh content kept getting added. However, as time went on, the number of players for the game started to decrease. The efforts by Phoenix Labs to attract new gamers, like releasing the game on Steam, didn’t generate the anticipated results.

Interestingly enough, the announcement about Dauntless ceasing operations falls on the very same week when Capcom is set to launch its new Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter Rise. Consequently, gamers won’t run out of monster hunting games to enjoy. However, Dauntless, in its quest to compete with Capcom’s highly successful Monster Hunter series, will no longer be an option.
