Back in late last year, it was Strange Scaffold who unveiled the intriguing title, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown”. Although we’re yet to know the exact release date, fans like me have been given a sneak peek thanks to a freshly released demo. This exciting demo drop coincides with Steam’s Next Fest event, which runs until March 3rd. Based on what’s been revealed thus far, “Tactical Takedown” seems to be a significant departure from the usual TMNT gaming experiences, and this early access could provide an excellent vantage point to gauge its progression.
If you’ve been out of the loop, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown” stands as a turn-based strategy game that offers characters reminiscent of action figures. The stages, on the other hand, are designed to mimic dioramas, offering a distinctive aesthetic different from recent TMNT games like “Shredder’s Revenge” and “Mutants Unleashed.” Notably, “Mutants Unleashed” follows the storyline of the latest movie, portraying the turtles in their younger forms. Conversely, “Tactical Takedown” presents older versions of the characters, as they are nearing adulthood. This shift gives the game a more mature and somber tone, with Master Splinter and the Shredder both deceased at the start of the storyline.
Alongside the demo’s launch, Strange Scaffold joined Steam Next Fest with a video featuring the game developers playing the latest title. Though Shredder is supposedly deceased, the video highlighted several of his minions like the Foot Clan, Roadkill Rodneys, Mousers, and others. The game will retain some recognizable elements from earlier Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, such as pizzas that restore health (hot dogs offer similar benefits). In addition to utilizing their special abilities to vanquish foes, the Ninja Turtles can also exploit stage hazards. A noteworthy moment in the Steam video depicts passing vehicles on the street eliminating adversaries who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The demonstration for the game “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown” is exclusive to Steam, which is understandable since it’s currently only confirmed for that platform. Given their extensive history in video game consoles, it’s likely that “Tactical Takedown” will be announced for other platforms eventually. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate” originally debuted as an exclusive for Apple Arcade but later came to consoles last year. Here’s hoping we’ll see a similar transition for “Tactical Takedown,” even if the game doesn’t come to consoles simultaneously with its PC release.
It’s yet to be determined if “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown” will join the ranks of the franchise’s top-tier games, but based on what we’ve seen so far, it certainly appears promising. Strange Scaffold, the developer behind this project, has a strong history of successful games, and this latest TMNT title seems poised to continue that trend. Interested players can get a taste by trying out the demo, which you can access right here on Steam.
