Oh, Balatro, you captivating creature. Despite being unfairly criticized as a gambling game and briefly removed from the PlayStation Store following an unexpected PEGI rating increase to 18, its creator Localthunk, who isn’t particularly fond of gambling, has successfully contested this decision. The engrossing poker-like game has now had its rating revised, receiving a more fitting 12 after over a year of attempts.
According to the Pan European Game Information company’s website (thanks to Eurogamer for their role), both common sense and Localthunk ultimately won out in this case. The outcome of this situation has led to changes within the game industry, as the PEGI 18 rating for the game Balatro was adjusted to a PEGI 12 after a successful appeal by the publisher Sold Out Sales & Marketing. The Complaints Board determined that, while the game provides explanations for different poker hands, the roguelike deck-building game incorporates magical elements which warranted a lower PEGI rating of 12.
In this scenario, it appears that the situation has reached a satisfactory resolution, despite potentially costing the developer some revenue. Here’s hoping that all the goodwill generated by Balatro has offset this specific issue: “Given these circumstances, the PEGI Experts Group will create a more detailed set of classification rules to manage gambling themes and the depiction, instruction, and glamorization of gambling for different age groups.
