Chris Pratt has expressed his interest in rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Star-Lord (Peter Quill) under the right circumstances, highlighting the importance of strong storytelling in an interview with ComicBook at the premiere of “The Electric State”. Despite concluding his Guardians of the Galaxy journey with the release of Vol. 3 in 2023, Pratt seems open to reprising the role but acknowledges difficulties in continuing the character’s story without director James Gunn. This follows Dave Bautista’s recent statements about possibly returning as Drax, indicating that the original Guardians cast maintains their loyalty to the filmmaker despite his current involvement with DC Studios.
Pratt expressed his willingness but also highlighted the challenge Marvel Studios might face in continuing the Star-Lord character’s journey without Gunn, who crafted the unique style and character development in the Guardians films. Pratt stated, “I’m open to anything, but it would need to be excellent storytelling and it would be quite difficult because he’s got some big shoes to fill.” This indicates a high expectation for any potential new direction.
In a similar vein to Bautista’s recent statements, while discussing his upcoming movie “In the Lost Lands”, he expressed that he would only reprise his role as Drax under very particular conditions. He stated bluntly, “Drax is closed off to me. If James Gunn were to call me and ask if I would take on a role as Drax again, I wouldn’t be interested.” Recognizing that Gunn has moved on to co-head DC Studios with Peter Safran, he conceded that this change in direction likely rules out his return to Marvel projects for the time being.
The Challenges and Possibilities for Star-Lord’s MCU Future
In the finale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Star-Lord’s future remains ambiguous as he goes back to Earth to bond with his grandfather following the Guardians’ split. The movie’s end credits scene, “The Legendary Star-Lord will return,” underscores Marvel’s plan to revive the character, hinting at possible solo exploits instead of group missions, which aligns with both his nickname from the first film and his standalone comic book series released in 2014.
Although there was an assurance for his return, the situation ahead remains complex due to unexpected changes in leadership style. Gunn’s move to head DC Studios leaves a substantial gap in the Guardians series, as it thrived under his distinct direction. The filmmaker crafted the team’s signature mix of witty humor, deep emotions, and space exploration that would be tough for any replacement to mimic. With Gunn fully devoted to kick-starting the new DC Universe, starting with this summer’s Superman movie, it appears extremely unlikely he will return to guide another Marvel project – a fact that undoubtedly affects both Pratt and Bautista’s thoughts on resuming their characters.
As a diehard Marvel fan, I’m excited about the possibilities for Star-Lord! Marvel Studios could be planning to include him in upcoming team-up movies like “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars.” In these epic adventures, he might get embroiled in significant plotlines without needing a full Guardians reunion. On the other hand, they might be working on a standalone project, hinted at by the “Legendary Star-Lord will return” teaser. However, Chris Pratt’s recent statements indicate that he would approach such an offer with prudence if Gunn isn’t involved in the project.
In the upcoming weeks, you’ll see Pratt feature in Netflix’s show titled “The Electric State“. This exciting production is set to stream on Netflix starting from March 14th.
