During a recent press event that ComicBook attended, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen of DC Studios, gave an in-depth update on the progress of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. They confirmed that Andy Muschietti, initially appointed as director, is still being considered for the role, but his participation hinges on his response to the script being written at present. This clarification was made due to uncertainties regarding the film’s production timeline, the casting of Batman within the DC Universe, and how it will share space with Matt Reeves’ standalone Batman series featuring Robert Pattinson, which is independently continuing under DC Studios as an Elseworlds story outside the primary DCU continuity.
Currently, we’re working on finalizing the script, and once it reaches a stage where we believe it’s ready, we’ll present it to Andy for his review. James Gunn further added that they’ll assess if it aligns well with him. During the press conference, the head of DC Studios emphasized his active role in this project by saying, “I’m deeply engaged in the script development.” This recent update is following Muschietti’s comments from January 2025, where he mentioned positive intentions for his involvement and ongoing discussions about ideas, storyline, and tone. At that time, Muschietti also stated that DC Studios was working on a plan to enable both The Batman 2 and The Brave and the Bold to coexist as separate franchises.
At the press gathering, Gunn and Safran clarified ongoing rumors suggesting Robert Pattinson might play Batman not only in Reeves’ crime series but also in the primary DC Universe. The officials stated it was almost improbable that Pattinson would extend his portrayal of the Dark Knight into the broader superhero realm, contradicting prior discussions about potential alternatives. This revelation agrees with the timeline established in the DCU’s animated series “Creature Commandos,” where Batman has been active for over a decade, as opposed to Pattinson’s second-year vigilante in “The Batman.
DCU’s Batman Will Be Separate From Pattinson’s Dark Knight
In my perspective, I’m eagerly waiting to learn who will don the cape and cowl in the DCU’s next Batman adventure. It seems that the casting process hasn’t started yet, as the script for the upcoming project is still being finessed. Yet, Gunn and Safran are adamant about crafting a unique Batman within their universe, expressing their fondness for Robert Pattinson in this role. Regarding him, they said, “We appreciate him, but we need to introduce our version of Batman into the DCU.” This statement underscores the studios’ determination to keep separate Batman narratives going strong. They are currently working on both Reeves’ Batman 2, set for release on October 1, 2027, and what they call the Batman Epic Crime Saga.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d like to shed some light on the distinctions between these interconnected worlds. Matt Reeves himself has made it clear that only his Batman trilogy and The Penguin series reside within his gritty, realistic universe. In contrast, other upcoming Batman-related projects, such as the Clayface horror movie helmed by James Watkins from a script penned by Mike Flanagan, will be deeply rooted in the DCU continuity. This R-rated, body-horror film focusing on the mud-based, shape-shifting nemesis of Batman promises to be “psychological,” “gross,” and a pure horror experience, veering sharply away from the deliberate lack of fantastical elements and metahuman characters in Reeves’ more grounded Batman universe.
Although they haven’t chosen an actor for their Batman character yet, Gunn hinted that he might make an appearance before “The Brave and the Bold” premieres. He added, “I wouldn’t dismiss any possibilities. He could show up in another project instead. However, we don’t have the actor selected [yet].” This implies that DCU’s Batman may debut in a different upcoming project, possibly even in “Clayface,” which is set to start filming this summer and will be released on September 11, 2026. The casting for this movie is anticipated to start soon, which could provide insights into the broader strategy for Batman within the DCU.
