DC Studios Bosses Have Had Talks With NetherRealm, Rocksteady About Future Games

Under the latest plan by DC Studios to construct a unified universe for their comic book adaptations, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, are said to have had discussions with Warner Bros. studios, which have previously developed superhero video games such as Rocksteady Studios and NetherRealm Studios.

During a recent DC Studios gathering, Gunn and Safran disclosed that they’ve had discussions with game studios responsible for productions like the Batman: Arkham series and Injustice series regarding the future landscape of DC video games.

At the event, Safran mentioned their tight collaboration with JB Perrette, who oversees that particular division. This is a unique setup at Warner Bros, as it’s the first time such close working relationships have been established. James and I often meet with the studio heads under JB’s leadership, whether they are from NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We discuss characters and stories that we find intriguing, which aligns with their interests as well.

Gunn discussed ongoing talks with game studios regarding different elements of games now being created, including plotlines. As Gunn stated, they collaborated with the studios to brainstorm potential storylines for these games, taking into account DC Studios’ future strategies for those character narratives.

In the early phases of our projects, I ponder over potential designs, discussing possibilities and brainstorming narratives. Sometimes, I suggest a direction for the story, pointing out, ‘Perhaps you might find it interesting to explore this character’s arc since we have plans to develop them further.’

As a gaming enthusiast, it’s important to mention that these discussions are centered around the initial phases of game development. According to Gunn, we might start witnessing the outcomes of these strategies in about “a couple of years” from hereon.

Despite facing setbacks following the less-than-successful launch of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” Rocksteady Studios appears to have moved on, possibly diving back into the Batman universe for their upcoming project. A job listing from earlier this month hints that the new game will be a third-person open-world title, with a focus on close-quarters combat reminiscent of the Batman franchise.

Although it’s been suggested that the game is being developed, whispers also hint that the completed project is likely “several years from release”. It appears that work on this new game began shortly after the studio finished Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, as Rocksteady has allegedly been presenting ideas for a single-player title since June 2024.

In late 2024, Rocksteady Studios faced another wave of job cuts, which was especially unfortunate given their recent setback with “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.” This news followed a similar round of layoffs that occurred in September 2024, during which more than half of their Quality Assurance team was let go.

Contrary to that, NetherRealm Studios has primarily dedicated its efforts towards the Mortal Kombat series in recent times. Their last game linked to DC was Injustice 2, a fighting title. Although this game received favorable reviews initially, the studio has since been concentrating on enhancing their more contemporary Mortal Kombat releases, such as additional content for Mortal Kombat 1.
