James Gunn working with Arkham and Injustice developers on “really interesting” DC games

In the near future, the DC film universe, under the guidance of James Gunn, will also venture into the world of video game development.

These games are set within the same continuity as the movies, and it appears that a renowned game developer, famous for creating some of the best-loved Batman games ever made, is going to contribute.

James Gunn, along with DC Studios co-chairperson Peter Safran, have been discussing potential video game adaptations based on their upcoming movies with Rocksteady (famous for the Arkham series) and NetherRealm (creators of Mortal Kombat). At this stage, they’ve confirmed that discussions are underway, hinting at active progress.

For more than ten years, there hasn’t been a new Batman Arkham game, except for 2024’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. However, whispers started circulating last year about Rocksteady working on a fresh Batman project. This project was said to be a single-player game (not the previously announced VR title Arkham Shadows).

As a die-hard fan, it appeared that a wise move for Rocksteady would be to revisit Batman following the poor sales of Kill the Justice League, which had some whispering about their potential closure. Yet, these were mere speculations. Now, we’ve got the confirmation directly from Gunn and Safran themselves, hinting at upcoming projects.

According to IGN, Safran mentioned at a recent DC Studios gathering that he and James often discuss characters and storylines with the studio executives led by JB (CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros Discovery), whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. They engage in these conversations about what appeals to us and what interests them.

We often discuss project designs during their initial phases. We brainstorm potential narratives and suggest possibilities like, ‘Perhaps you’d prefer this direction since we might be exploring a certain character in the future.’

When could we expect to reap the benefits from these discussions? According to Safran, it would take a few more years, but given the lengthy development process of triple-A games these days, we’re willing to wait.

He mentioned that it’s still a few years off, but we’ve been quite engaged with various upcoming projects. He found it particularly intriguing.

If waiting for two years seems too much, consider playing the upcoming Spider-Man 2 in 2023, especially if you haven’t played it yet. If you have, give it another spin as it represents the pinnacle of superhero gaming experience.
