As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that The Punisher, the iconic gun-wielding vigilante played by Jon Bernthal, will have his own special spotlight! Instead of continuing as a new season on our screens, this time around, he’ll take center stage in a Disney+ special – similar to the unique presentations like “Werewolf by Night” and the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.”
Excitingly, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed this news! The script for this Marvel’s Special Presentation will be penned by Bernthal himself, in collaboration with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is also set to direct. These two have previously worked together on “We Own This City.”
This marks the third Marvel’s Special Presentation project, further demonstrating Marvel’s commitment to their Defenders characters. I can hardly wait for this exciting new chapter in The Punisher’s story!
In Brad Winderbaum’s words, the Punisher Special Presentation is reminiscent of a rapid-fire narrative while still delivering the deep emotional impact you’d expect from a Frank Castle story. He described it as incredibly thrilling. This concept emerged during the filming of Daredevil: Born Again, where Jon Bernthal reappears as the Punisher alongside other Marvel Netflix characters such as Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.
In the thrilling sequel, “Daredevil: Born Again,” I find myself approaching Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, for a mission that Matt Murdock himself is reluctant to undertake. With his unyielding determination and blunt approach, Frank dives headfirst into the heart of the issue like a bull in a china shop.
Winderbaum stated, “Bernthal is an actor of his generation, truly exceptional in every role he takes on, but especially so as Frank Castle. He has a deep understanding of the character, which makes him outstanding… Moreover, I’m a big fan of The Punisher, and I admire Jon’s interpretation of the character even more. The fact that he’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe allows him to enrich this universe with his portrayal, particularly in the gritty street-level stories. This is an immense opportunity, and as a fan, it’s simply amazing.
Brad Winderbaum mentioned Marvel Studios’ plans for more Special Presentations. When asked by ComicBook at the Agatha All Along press event if fans could expect more of these, he replied affirmatively. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, had earlier confirmed that one Special Presentation is in development, although it may not be released until as late as 2026. It’s speculated that this could be a reference to The Punisher Special Presentation.
“There will be more,” Feige told Collider. “You just have to wait.”
Daredevil: Born Again debuts on Disney+ March 4th with a two-episode premiere.
