It’s been disclosed by James Pritchard, Agatha Christie’s great-grandson, that a new adaptation featuring the famous detective Miss Marple is underway. He considers the tales surrounding this character among Christie’s finest mystery novels.
Previously, the character was depicted in live-action performances by Helen Hayes (in two American movies), Joan Hickson (in a BBC series from the ’80s), Geraldine McEwan, and Julia McKenzie (in an ITV adaptation based on highly respected original works).
2013 marked the end of the previous attempt, during which Pritchard shared in an interview with TopMob that for a substantial portion of the past ten years, he’s been working towards reviving the character.
Asked about the emerging trend of ‘cozy crime’ novels, such as The Thursday Murder Club, The Madame Blanc Mysteries, and The Marlow Murder Club, Pritchard refused to label it as such – however, he acknowledged that there can be an element of levity in a detective story.
He expressed his dislike for the term ‘cozy crime,’ feeling it didn’t align with what his great-grandmother wrote. However, he noted that her work had a humorous element and suggested that not all stories should be as somber as those portrayed by Sarah [Phelps, screenwriter].
“[Towards Zero] is a little lighter and I can certainly see us doing more [in that style].”
In a playful manner, Pritchard hinted that Miss Marple might be the upcoming subject, poised to engage in another battle with Hercule Poirot for the position of Agatha Christie’s most illustrious detective, yet he declined to disclose who is working on this potential project.
He expressed his immense enthusiasm, saying, “I can hardly contain my excitement.” He’s been attempting to launch a project involving Miss Marple for quite some time now. Poirot, however, has been hogging the spotlight from her since the beginning, which is why things have gone this way for so long.

Five years ago, I reread all the Miss Marple stories and was reminded of how excellent they truly are. Compared to Poirot, who has some of Agatha Christie’s greatest works, if we were to compile a top 10 list, Miss Marple would undoubtedly secure at least two or three spots. She is often overlooked, but her contributions to Christie’s work should not be underestimated.
Pritchard ended his thoughts by reminiscing about his great-grandmother, whom he believes was responsible for creating many powerful female characters, among whom Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple stands out as one of the most prominent.
He stated: “She was a fascinating lady, for she had a reserved, demure side, yet I believe she possessed a strong, assertive character as well.
Though she wouldn’t label herself a feminist, she firmly believed in her own power, equal to any male counterpart she encountered. This is the type of strong-willed woman she chose to portray in her writing.
