In simpler terms, the gameplay of Monster Hunter Wilds offers a wealth of fresh details to veterans like me. Within just a few hunts, Capcom surprised me with numerous enhancements such as Seikrets, base camps, weapon holders, temporary campsites, and streamlined quest generation. “This is so efficient,” I mused. “Capcom truly understands the needs of dedicated players!
After approximately eight hours, I found myself pondering a question I was reluctant to hear the answer to: While these on-map base camps are convenient, does it mean there’s no centralized village in Wilds? That’s disappointing. The advantages of Wilds’ streamlining are evident, but it’s the smaller details—like World’s personality—that make up the series, and especially World, that seem to be sacrificed. Unlike previous games, my hunter doesn’t have a single place to call home in Wilds—no central hub for all questing, crafting, combining, farming, gathering, and cooking activities. It’s the lack of a cooking area that hurts the most.
In the heart of the Windward Plains base camp, there’s a cat surrounded by fresh supplies. I thought since the initial open beta that in the final game this cat would be like Monster Hunter’s version of the Meowscular Chef, ready to cook a meal before every hunt. However, it turns out he’s just there to distribute rations occasionally. This is when I discovered that the “expanded” BBQ grill in Wilds isn’t simply another means to prepare a meal before a hunt, but the new method itself.
Preparing meals in the Wilds is undeniably handy as it can be done anywhere, and Capcom has simplified the intricate ingredient system of the world into an easy-to-understand recipe: Ration + Ingredient + Topping equals a meal that provides bonuses. This is similar to the dango in Monster Hunter Rise, where you’re almost assured of getting the bonus linked with the special ingredient and topping added to the dish, like increased healing or fire resistance. I also appreciate that the special ingredients themselves are hard to come by. The Wilds is quite frugal when it comes to distributing them, and I spent a significant amount of my Low Rank time preparing plain steaks that only offered standard HP and stamina boosts. I admire the thoughtfulness this adds – the perfect meal for my next hunt isn’t handed to me; instead, I need to venture out and actively search for the ingredients.
On more than one occasion during my hunting expeditions, having the ability to prepare food anywhere has been incredibly convenient. This means I don’t have to retreat back to camp and travel for hours just to eat a steak; instead, I can quickly set up a makeshift shelter, find a suitable hiding spot behind a rock, and enjoy my meal with ease.
Struggle meal
Despite the game’s impressive visuals that make my homemade steak and mushrooms look appetizing, it’s hard not to notice that my hunter’s meals are quite simple. A head of lettuce with melted cheese on top? I doubt it could provide the nutritional needs necessary to take down Rey Dau, the formidable apex predator of the Windward Plains, especially considering the same meal I’d make when I was a college student with only $78 in my bank account.
I apologize for being blunt, but visually speaking, it seems like a step backward. The Meowscular Chef and his team are truly skilled artisans, managing to prepare and serve a delectable gourmet roast chicken and vegetable platter in just twenty seconds, which could easily feed a family of four. My cat would devour the entire thing, wouldn’t yours? Food that is prepared with such care and affection can provide genuine benefits.
In simpler terms, while Wilds does boast chef-level cooking skills, it’s not very common to witness such culinary mastery. At certain stages in the narrative, villages may occasionally invite you to partake in a grand feast, complete with an enticing, appetizing visual sequence (using the Monster Hunter Wilds Benchmark tool, you might have come across one of these scenes). These meals are delightful, but over 44 hours of gameplay, I’ve only received such invitations on a handful of occasions.
The charm of the Meowscular Chef lay in his routine: He was the final preparer before embarking on a quest, faithfully catering to his hunters like a parent standing by the door with a packed lunchbox ready. On the other hand, Wilds’ solo cooking is functional, easy, and fits with its new sandbox style of hunting. However, it lacks the warmth, joy, and sociability that one would find in a group setting.
