Quantic Dream, famous for cinematic games such as “Detroit: Become Human” and the upcoming “Star Wars: Eclipse,” has shared its thoughts on its collaboration with NetEase following reports that NetEase is reducing international investments and shutting down studios. In a LinkedIn post, Guillaume de Fondaumière, the studio’s CEO and head of publishing, addressed the situation openly.
According to de Fondaumière, Quantic Dream’s own operations have remained unchanged by NetEase’s recent actions, as both its studios in Paris and Montreal are currently working on their respective projects at a fast pace. De Fondaumière also expressed his disappointment about the recent job cuts and studio shutdowns that have occurred under NetEase.
David Cage (Quantic president) and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the fans and friends who have contacted us about Quantic Dream over the past few days. Rest assured that our studios based in Paris and Montreal are still operational and functioning as normal. We’re full steam ahead with our projects, with open job positions available in both locations if anyone’s interested.
According to de Fondaumière, NetEase has been a committed collaborator that enabled Quantic Dream to carry out its creative endeavors with both artistic liberty and financial support. The partnership between the two began in 2019 when NetEase bought a portion of Quantic Dream’s ownership, culminating in NetEase acquiring the entire studio in 2022.
Notably, de Fondaumière designates the year 2024 as a record-breaking period in terms of revenue for Quantic Dream, largely due to the success of games such as Detroit: Become Human. This game saw sales of approximately 11 million units worldwide on both PC and PlayStation platforms, representing a 2 million increase compared to the previous year.
In a wrap-up, de Fondaumière stated that the advancements in our ongoing projects are unfolding according to schedule, and we are wholeheartedly dedicated to bringing forth and unveiling these groundbreaking, top-tier productions in the near future.
Earlier in the week, Tomasz Tinc, co-owner and chief publishing officer at Rebel Wolves, shared a statement similar to this one, indicating that the actions taken by NetEase have not impacted their studio at this time. The development of The Blood of Dawnwalker is fully financed and proceeding as planned without any disruptions.
To begin with, let me express my gratitude for the heartfelt messages and well-wishes you’ve sent, as shared by Tinc in his recent statement. Rest assured, the growth of our game remains on track, and we currently have no financial concerns to report.
We’ve successfully secured funding for the creation of ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker‘, and we collaborate closely with our partners and friends at Bandai Namco, our game’s worldwide publisher, to bring the initial chapter of the Dawnwalker story to fruition.
Likewise, the head of Anchor Point Studios, Paul Ehreth, mentioned that despite NetEase’s studio shutdowns, their own studio remained undeterred and continued to progress at full speed in developing their game.
He expressed that NetEase has been an excellent collaborator for us, offering creative control and development assistance, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to jointly release an outstanding game in the future. While the industry may be experiencing choppy waters at the moment, our growth continues, and we have several open positions for those seeking a secure environment.
