Wonder Woman game cancelled as multiple Warner Bros studios shut down

2021 brought the exciting news about an upcoming Wonder Woman game, as it was announced that Monolith Productions had embarked on creating a standalone, open-world adventure featuring everyone’s favorite Amazonian heroine.

The story lacked a headline, yet it was thrilling. Particularly captivating for enthusiasts of the DC universe, as it featured a little-known character in video games.

Wonder Woman has not been the lead character, but she’s made appearances in various games such as Justice League Heroes on the PlayStation 2, the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) Infinite Crisis, and also in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.

It was thrilling to consider her appearing in a video game, particularly since it’s produced by the team behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

As a fan, I was assured that this game wouldn’t require continuous updates or live services. However, it seems that’s no longer the case. Despite the initial promise and positive signs, the situation has changed.

According to a statement made to Ethan Gach, senior reporter at Kotaku, Warner Bros has had to make challenging decisions regarding the organization of their development studios and investments. These choices are aimed at creating top-tier games using their main franchises: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Comics, and Game of Thrones.

Following thoughtful deliberation, we’ve decided to shut down three of our game development centers: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros Games San Diego. This move represents a shift in our strategic focus rather than a critique of their capabilities or the exceptional skills they possess.

Unfortunately, we won’t be proceeding with the creation of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game. We had aimed to deliver an exceptional, top-quality gaming experience for both players and fans that truly reflected the iconic character, but it no longer aligns with our current strategic objectives.

It brings us joy to see other games being developed, but it’s disheartening news for these studios, particularly considering their impressive work on the Middle-earth game series.

Exciting developments are brewing as James Gunn collaborates with the Arkham crew for upcoming ventures. Fingers crossed that a Wonder Woman video game gets made within this context. Unfortunately, it’s unfortunate we won’t witness the project by Monolith Productions come to life.
