The release date for Season 2 of “Doctor Who” has been officially set. On a Wednesday, both BBC and Disney Branded Television made this announcement, stating that Season 2 will start streaming on Saturday, April 12th at 3 p.m. ET on Disney+ in regions outside the UK. Similar to Season 1, each episode will become available weekly, airing simultaneously on the BBC iPlayer app in the UK. In this new season, Ncuti Gatwa reprises his role as the Doctor, with Varada Sethu joining him as a new companion named Belinda Chandra. Last season’s companion, Millie Gibson’s character Ruby Sunday, will be seen throughout the new season.
Moreover, it’s been announced that Alan Cumming, known for his roles as Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, host of the popular series The Traitors, and a previous Doctor Who guest star as King James I in the 2018 episode “The Witchfinders”, will be part of the cast for Doctor Who Season 2. In the second episode, Mr. Ring-a-Ding, Cumming’s character is described as a cheerful, musical being residing in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, an unexpected event occurs in 1952 when Mr Ring-a-Ding, after years of screenings in cinemas, suddenly perceives the real world outside the screen, leading to a sequence of events that are downright chilling.
In a press statement, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies praises Alan Cumming, stating that he infuses a runaway cartoon with unparalleled wit, mischief, peril, and excitement. With his addition to the Doctor Who universe, the series becomes even wilder and crazier than before, making it an immense privilege to have him join the TARDIS crew.
Doctor Who Season 2 Premieres Simultaneously on Disney+ and iPlayer
“The BBC and Disney have shared a summary of Doctor Who Season 2. The summary says that the Doctor encounters Belinda Chandra and embarks on an exciting journey to bring her back to Earth. However, a secret power is preventing their return, so the TARDIS crew must confront challenges, adversaries, and horrors of unprecedented scale.
Hearing that the release date for Season 2’s premiere of “Doctor Who” might bring some positive news to fans, who have been speculating about potential cancellations and a possible second suspension of the series, along with rumors suggesting Ncuti Gatwa may be planning to depart from the show. However, the BBC has dismissed these rumors, clarifying that no decisions regarding the show’s future will be made until after all episodes of Season 2 have been broadcasted to audiences.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Season 2 of Doctor Who brings Ncuti Gatwa into the role of the Doctor, with Varada Sethu portraying Belinda Chandra and Millie Gibson stepping into Ruby Sunday. Furthermore, Alan Cumming is set to grace our screens as a guest star in this season, along with Rose Ayling-Ellis, Christopher Chung, Anita Dobson, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave reprising her role as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart before taking the lead in the upcoming Doctor Who spinoff series The War Between the Land and Sea. Lastly, we have Susan Twist joining us as the enigmatic Mrs. Flood!
As the helmsman of “Doctor Who,” I’m privileged to work alongside fellow executive producers such as Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter. This iconic series is jointly produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios, for Disney Branded Television, BBC One, and BBC iPlayer.
