Shang-Chi 2 Gets Encouraging Update From Star (But When Will it Come Out?)

Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel, discusses updates on the upcoming “Shang-Chi 2” movie. Despite director Destin Daniel Cretton being occupied with directing “Spider-Man 4” next summer, the sequel is still moving forward. During an interview with Screen Rant while promoting his latest film “Last Breath”, Liu shared that he frequently communicates with Cretton and they both look forward to Shang-Chi’s return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Liu stated that he doesn’t believe the production of “Spider-Man 4” has influenced “Shang-Chi 2”. Instead, he shared that his conversations with Destin are filled only with eagerness and anticipation about making this movie.

Debuting in 2021, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” has been widely acclaimed as one of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga’s top films. Critics raved about it, particularly its thrilling action scenes and Liu’s impressive portrayal of the main character. Not only was “Shang-Chi” a box office hit, amassing $432.2 million globally at a time when cinemas were gradually reopening post-pandemic, but a sequel was swiftly confirmed with Cretton set to pen and direct it.

Regarding the success of “Shang-Chi”, Marvel appears to be delaying plans for a sequel. Earlier, Cretton was set to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” (which later became “Doomsday”), but he moved on from that project and took up “Spider-Man 4”, due out in July 2026 instead. Throughout this transition, Liu has reassured fans that a second installment of “Shang-Chi” is indeed in the works at some stage.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to hear that Shang-Chi 2 is still in development, but it seems like we fans might need to be patient for a few more years before we get to witness its grandeur. Director Destin Daniel Cretton is currently deeply engrossed with Spider-Man 4, which is set to start production this summer. After that, he’ll be managing the post-production process until the movie hits the screens. Given the colossal nature of MCU blockbusters and the need for a break after such massive projects, I suspect Cretton will focus on Shang-Chi 2 only after Spider-Man 4’s release. With Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for 2027, it’s quite possible that Shang-Chi 2 might make its appearance sometime thereafter, perhaps one of the Marvel movie dates Disney has earmarked for 2028.

Introducing Shang-Chi as a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a breath of fresh air, and his film’s closing scene hinted at a promising future for him. Yet, it remains unclear when fans will get to see Shang-Chi again on the big screen. Liu might reappear in Avengers: Doomsday, but so far, no official announcements have been made. Considering the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, this delay has left many fans disappointed. With high expectations following his first film, Marvel missed an opportunity to capitalize on the buzz. Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Spider-Man 4, hoping that it will pave the way for a long-awaited sequel to Shang-Chi 2.
