In the recent episode of EastEnders (February 26, 2025), it was revealed that Grant Mitchell (played by Ross Kemp) found out that his son, Mark Fowler Jr, acknowledges him as his biological father.
After knowing Mark for nearly ten years, Grant concluded it was best for Mark Jr that they part ways.
However, when Grant discussed the matter with his former wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), he was taken aback to discover that Mark had been made aware of his role as Grant’s son, a fact unknown to him.
Sharon made clear that Mark Jr has reached adulthood, implying that his mother, Michelle Fowler (played by Sue Tully or Jenna Russell), no longer holds the authority to make decisions on his behalf.
It was observed by Grant that Mark Jr hadn’t reached out to him, and shortly after, he seemed deep in thought as he spotted the name of the young man listed in Sharon’s contacts book.
Currently, fans are debating whether this recent event might signal a return for Mark Jr. However, let’s delve into his past to understand his origins better.
Read on below for all you need to know on the absent Mark Fowler Jr…
Who is Mark Fowler Jr in EastEnders?
Mark Jr was born as a result of a brief romantic encounter between Grant and Michelle. Later, Michelle relocated to the United States, and Mark Jr entered the world in 1996.
Initially, only Michelle’s older brother Mark (Todd Carty) was privy to the fact that Grant was her child’s father. However, twenty years later, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) stumbled upon a letter from Michelle in his ex-wife Sharon’s bag, which was intended for Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor). This letter revealed Mark as the true father of the child.
Martin (James Bye), who is Sharon and Mark’s uncle, convinced Phil not to reveal the truth after contacting Mark. Michelle informed her son that Phil had lied, and when Mark arrived in Walford, Phil maintained Sharon’s request by stating he and Mark had never had any conversation before.
For several weeks, Mark resided in Albert Square, growing closer to his relatives from the Fowler family. However, a hint of apprehension arose when Mark developed feelings for Grant’s daughter Courtney (portrayed by Alice Nokes), and her affection towards him was reciprocal. Yet, they were unaware that they shared a familial bond as half-siblings!
In a hurry, Ian Beale, who is the cousin of both Sharon and Michelle, tried to intervene as he saw Mark and Courtney about to escalate their actions.
After setting up a return flight to the U.S. for Mark, however, before he could depart, Mark encountered Grant in an unusual circumstance. This encounter occurred when Grant assisted in rescuing Grant’s nephew Ben, who was being threatened by the killers of Ben’s boyfriend Paul Coker. At that time, Ben was portrayed by Harry Reid on screen.
Following the event, Phil disclosed to Grant that Mark was his child, however, after interrupting Mark and Courtney’s kiss, Grant decided against disclosing this fact.
At the eleventh hour, Grant decided to extend an invitation to Mark for a beverage, yet when Mark reminisced affectionately about the man who brought him up, Grant eventually chose to remain silent instead.
However, Mark discovered Grant’s true identity, which was later validated by Sharon. She advised Mark to keep his distance from Grant. Since then, Mark has left for America and hasn’t reappeared yet. But will he continue to stay out of sight?
Will Mark Fowler Jr return to EastEnders?

To this point, it remains unconfirmed that Mark Jr is returning to Walford. However, fans have been pondering if specific events might lead to his return.
Since Grant is heading back to Portugal, it wouldn’t be logical for Mark to return if the reunion with his father is a priority. However, even if Grant doesn’t reach out to Mark, he can find many Mitchell family members to connect with instead.
Beyond the connection with Grant, Mark is also a part of the Fowler/Beale family line. Sadly, his uncle Martin perished during a live episode of EastEnders, which was particularly intense. Consequently, Mark’s sister Vicki (currently portrayed by Alice Haig) and cousin Bex (Jasmine Armfield) are expected to return for Martin’s funeral.
With no sign of Michelle returning (that we know of), might Mark turn up to pay his own respects?
It’s worth mentioning that should Mark Jr return, a new actor would likely be needed to play the part, as the original actor, Ned Porteous, is now starring on Emmerdale under the character Joe Tate.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder if we’re going to see a fresh talent step into the shoes of Mark Fowler Jr. Only time will tell, so keep your eyes peeled on the silver screen!
