Devil May Cry Anime Has the Power With Masters of the Universe Quip in New Promo

Over the years, the character Dante from the Devil May Cry video game series has gained iconic status. The initial installment of Capcom’s supernatural action series was released on PlayStation 2, and since then, Dante’s story has spanned five main games, numerous crossovers, and additional content. This spring, Netflix is set to reintroduce Dante in the anime realm, with Adi Shankar (Castlevania, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix) serving as an executive producer. As the release date draws near, a fresh preview clip has been unveiled, showcasing Dante’s fondness for extreme violence and his knack for making clever jokes with a nod to Eternia.

The upcoming anime adaptation of “Devil May Cry” is set to debut on Netflix on April 3rd, featuring an amusing opening theme of Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin'” that mirrors Dante’s dynamic energy and style. With a reported run of eight episodes, showrunner Shankar openly admires the franchise, often emulating characters’ appearances even during interviews. Given the expansive history of the game series, there’s rich material to draw from. However, this anime will carve its own narrative path, incorporating references and characters from the source material. Since Adi has expressed a deep affection for the Capcom franchise, fans can anticipate numerous Easter eggs in celebration of the video game series.

Dante, Master of The Universe

In the initial trailer for the forthcoming Netflix animated series, Dante showcases his abilities by annihilating two demons who are intent on slaying an innocent woman. After eliminating the nighttime creatures, the offspring of Sparda makes a quip about the demons resembling Skeletor and how the Eternia villain has “lost its charm since the ’80s.” Unsurprisingly, given Dante’s poor sense of humor, his joke falls flat with its intended recipients, even though he had just rescued her life.

The Masters of Netflix

Over the past few years, He-Man and his fellow heroes from Eternia have had multiple showings on the streaming platform. Kevin Smith played a significant role in reviving the saga of Masters of The Universe, with two series titled Masters of The Universe: Revelation and Masters of The Universe: Revolution. These reboots presented a much more somber interpretation of the original narrative. Although Revolution concluded with a scene after the credits suggesting a possible sequel, no official confirmation has been made for another series in this lineup. Additionally, the platform has also premiered He-Man And The Masters of The Universe, a more child-friendly story that utilized CGI to create its narrative.

In 2026, Amazon MGM Studios is set to release a live-action adaptation of “Masters of the Universe,” which could give it an advantage over “Devil May Cry.” The cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeleto, Idris Elba as Duncan, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lynn. Photos from the set suggest a fresh perspective for this film compared to its predecessors.

The First Devil May Cry Anime

The new Netflix series isn’t the first time Dante has made a splash in animation; he was previously brought to life by Madhouse in the series “Devil May Cry: The Animated Series” back in 2007. Unlike previous adaptations that let you play as Dante, this series allowed fans to simply watch his adventures unfold. Spanning twelve episodes, the show didn’t get a follow-up season and presented an original tale within the franchise. While Madhouse isn’t responsible for the adaptation of Adi Shankar’s creation, Studio Mir is now at the helm, having demonstrated their prowess through productions like “The Legend of Korra,” “My Adventures With Superman,” and many others.

Although the upcoming anime show is still a few weeks off, the same cannot be said about a fresh installment in the Devil May Cry video game franchise. Since Devil May Cry 5 was launched in 2019, no new sixth entry or spin-off has been announced. Given how the fifth game concluded, it serves as a satisfying finale for the long-lasting series. However, let’s hope that Dante and his team aren’t done with the gaming world just yet.
