As Pokemon Day 2025 draws near, The Pokemon Company has surprised fans with an unexpected announcement this year. It’s not about the latest updates for Pokemon Go or Pokemon Legends Z-A; instead, it’s a new venture in the realm of Pokémon. Over the past decade, we’ve seen numerous Pokemon collaborations, from Happy Meals at McDonald’s to denim collections with Levi’s. However, this partnership is unique as it focuses on creating something practical. In an unexpected collaboration with car manufacturer Honda, they are unveiling the “Honda Koraidon Project” inspired by the legendary Pokémon featured in Pokemon Scarlet.
Long-standing enthusiasts of the Pokemon series may recall the Toyota Engineering Society introducing “Toyota Miraidon” last year, a creation inspired by the opposing Legendary Pokémon in Pokemon Violet. This was driven by Toyota’s tradition of monozukuri (manufacturing artistry) that they’ve passed down. In response, Honda developed the Koraidon Project, embodying their philosophy of innovation and superior quality. The team behind this project consisted of around 40 engineers and carries the motto, “Honda’s Dedication Brings Children’s Dreams to Life.
Although it’s unlikely that this particular Pokémon will be spotted cruising across the US borders anytime soon, from March 7th to 9th, you can catch a glimpse of the Honda Koraidon at the Honda Welcome Plaza Aoyama in Tokyo, Japan. While fans won’t get to witness the Pokémon move in real life during the event, the project is far more than just a visual spectacle. As stated in the official press release, the Honda Koraidon boasts an impressive feature called “Sprinting Build,” where it can walk on all fours and balance on two wheels autonomously, thanks to the self-balancing technology developed during the ASIMO humanoid robot research and Honda Riding Assist. Although it may seem strange, this remarkable innovation is a testament to Honda’s cutting-edge technology.
For enthusiasts of Pokémon, Koraidon boasts several features such as Sprinting Mode, Limit Mode, Swimming Mode, and Gliding Mode. Although it’s intriguing to imagine these different modes being incorporated into Honda’s project, the mere possibility that one could become a reality due to technological advancements is mind-blowing in itself.
In the Sprinting mode for the Honda Koraidon model, its hands, legs, head movements, and facial expressions will adapt according to its speed. This robot can function while being stationary and showcases moving eyes, a face, and blinking eyelids to mimic. This ability is quite remarkable, particularly within the realm of automated vehicles. Honda has successfully created a lifesize replica of the Pokémon character, paying close attention to every minor detail to reflect this legendary figure accurately. They even matched its height (8 feet 2 inches) and weight (668 lbs).
I’ve never witnessed such intricate details in a project centered around a Pokémon character, not to this degree. While Toyota reinvented Miraidon, Honda leveraged their technology to break boundaries. Upon watching the video, it’s clear that an immense amount of dedication and passion were poured into crafting a full-sized motorcycle in reality.
