It’s been confirmed that the Academy Award-winning actor, Gene Hackman, was discovered deceased at his residence in Santa Fe, this news comes alongside reports of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, being present.

It has been confirmed that Gene Hackman and his wife were discovered deceased at their home on Sunset Trail, on Wednesday afternoon. (Santa Fe County Sheriff’s statement in New Mexico)

Currently, we’re actively investigating this situation, but at the moment, we don’t think any suspicious activities or wrongdoing were involved.

In contrast, Hackman was a venerable 95 years old, whereas Arakawa was relatively younger at 63. Tragically, both of them, along with their beloved pet, were discovered to have passed away.

On February 26, 2025, around 1:45 PM, deputies from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office responded to a location on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park. There, they tragically discovered Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their pet dog all deceased.

1930 saw the birth of Hackman in San Bernardino, California. From the tender age of 10, he nurtured a dream of becoming an actor, yet his path to fame was somewhat unconventional.

At sixteen years old, he departed from home and falsified his age to join the U.S. Marine Corps. During his service spanning over four and a half years, he operated as a field radio operator, before being honorably discharged in 1951.

1956 marked the year when Hackman made up his mind to delve into acting. He joined the Pasadena Playhouse in California and formed a friendship with fellow actor Dustin Hoffman during this period.

Later, he landed minor roles in numerous television shows. After that, he took part in off-Broadway performances, followed by a stint on Broadway, where he appeared in productions like ‘Poor Richard’ and ‘The Natural Look’.

Hackman had an illustrious run in the movie industry, garnering two Oscars, two British Academy Film Awards, four Golden Globe trophies, and a Screen Actors Guild Award to his credit.

In my humble opinion, few actors have left such an indelible mark on the silver screen as he did. Known primarily for his iconic portrayal of Lex Luthor in the 1978 Superman movie and its sequel, Superman II from 1980, his performances were equally captivating in The French Connection and Unforgiven.

Additionally, he acted in films like Bonnie and Clyde, Mississippi Burning, The Conversation, and Crimson Tide. His last performance on the big screen was seen in the 2004 movie Welcome to Mooseport.

In the year 2008, Hackman formally stepped away from acting, and he made this known to Reuters, stating, “Although I haven’t announced my retirement with a press conference, it is true that I am no longer going to take on acting roles.

For several years now, I’ve been advised against saying something, fearing a special opportunity might arise. However, I no longer wish to continue withholding it.

Following his retirement, he teamed up with marine archaeologist Daniel Lenihan and penned down three historical fiction books. The most recent one, titled “Pursuit,” hit the shelves in 2013.

In 1991, Hackman tied the knot with Betsy, a skilled classical pianist. Prior to this, he had three children – Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne – with his former spouse, Faye Maltese, who tragically passed away in 2017.
