Monster Hunter Wilds: 10 Essential Items to Bring on Hunts

In every Monster Hunter game, careful planning and preparation are key to success. Monster Hunter Wilds follows suit, as neglecting these elements can result in a harsh lesson – the ill-prepared hunter rarely survives.

Luckily, you can minimize this issue by assembling a selection of useful items, also known as a prepared kit, for each hunting expedition. Regardless if you’re venturing out alone or with others, these essentials will prove beneficial, and it would be unwise to depart from the camp without them.

Regardless of whether you prefer minimal gear, this assortment of essentials significantly increases your chances of survival and aids you in overcoming even the toughest adversaries within the game.

Monster Hunter Wilds appears set to join the ranks of top-tier games within the series, and if you’re familiar with its predecessors, you might find several familiar items in it.

10. Potions / Mega Potions

You’re Throwing If You Don’t Bring Them

Potion usage provides hunters with a vital surge of restoration, and this effect is significantly amplified by the Mega Potion. Essentially, they are indispensable items, and you ought to carry 10 of each on every hunting expedition. No exceptions apply.

For swift healing during a hunt, Mega Potions are your best bet. Though your hunter drinks the potion rapidly, it’s not an immediate cure, so do try to create some distance from your target. Keep in mind that you can also use them strategically by rolling to interrupt, so choose your timing wisely.

These essential items are crucial for participating in an online hunt; I’d almost think it was a prank if you showed up without them! Given that situation, I strongly advise you to lean on your Mega Potions more than the standard ones, and this conveniently transitions us to my following suggestion.

9. Honey

Winnie The Pooh Was Onto Something

I strongly suggest you pair your Potion supply with a full set of 10 Honeys. In an emergency, you might be able to find some on the field, but having your own stock is always beneficial. The great thing about Honey is that you can mix it with regular Potions to enhance them into Mega Potions.

10 units of Honey equates to an impressive 20 Mega Potions. This amount should be more than sufficient for demanding hunts, unless one happens to play carelessly. In case you find yourself low, remember to check the pouch on your Seikret as it frequently contains additional healing items.

8. Rations / Well-Done Steaks

That Growling Better Not Be Your Stomach!

As an avid adventurer, I can’t stress enough the importance of having a good supply of rations, especially during those lengthy expeditions. Potion bottles help keep my green life meter full, while rations and well-cooked steaks play a crucial role in maintaining my yellow stamina level.

As a gamer, I notice that my energy level drops significantly when I sprint and execute numerous tasks in quick succession. However, taking a brief pause allows me to replenish it. Over time, the energy bar naturally shrinks, but consuming a Ration or cooking a Steak can help slow down this process.

The stamina consumption varies for each weapon, which means the importance of Rations can fluctuate based on your chosen gameplay approach.

As a gamer, nothing is more frustrating than biting the dust because you run out of breath. That’s a mistake I won’t make twice – stamina medicine will be an indispensable part of my gaming kit from now on.

7. Antidotes

I Don’t Feel So Good

In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, poison is quite prevalent as a debuff, and it poses a significant threat to your character’s health. One noteworthy feature in this game that enhances the player experience is that each debuff comes with a visible countdown timer.

Even though I understand that waiting 20+ seconds for the poison to wear off is necessary, I’d much prefer to swiftly counteract it using an Antidote. Granted, there’s a short cooldown period with Antidotes, but in combat situations, they are more beneficial compared to Potions.

Regrettably, Antidotes do not grant any form of protection or shielding. Instead, their use may only offer temporary relief, as one could potentially fall ill again shortly afterwards. However, it’s still preferable to having no remedy at all.

As a fellow enthusiast, I’d recommend always staying alert for the potent Herbal Medicine. It offers an Antidote-like benefit and a modest heal, making it a valuable addition to your inventory!

6. Nulberries

Natures Cure All

In every Monster Hunter game, Nulberries are often left vague in explanation, yet their significance is undeniably substantial.

In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, Nulberries offer an instant cure for afflictions known as ‘blights.’ For novice players, recognizing a blight can be challenging, but your character won’t consume the Nulberry unless it is needed to alleviate the condition.

The type of corruption you’re likely to encounter is called ‘Waterblight,’ which impairs your ability to recover stamina. Additionally, there are other precise forms of corruption such as ‘Thunderblight,’ which decreases your resistance to the stun debuff and may lead to aggravating deaths.

Don’t sleep on the humble Nulberry, as they can be almost essential against certain monsters.

5. Shock Traps/ Pitfall Traps

Don’t Ask What They Do With The Live Ones

In the toolkit of any dedicated hunter, traps play a crucial role; moreover, a unique feature of these traps is that they can be repositioned once set within the wilderness, a novelty for the series.

Both Traps operate quite similarly. They serve the purpose of momentarily disabling your objective, which makes them ideal during intense damage phases when used in conjunction with others.

If during the conflict, you develop a sense of morality, there’s an additional beneficial usage for them. Instead of eliminating, you could employ them on an unconscious or debilitated adversary to initiate apprehension rather than termination. Subduing mythical creatures doesn’t always result in superior rewards, but it may offer distinctive ones.

You might find all these details in the “Monster Field Guide”, since they vary among monsters. Remember that traps alone won’t catch beasts; instead, let’s discuss our next crucial piece of equipment.

(or)

For any information related to monsters, refer to the “Monster Field Guide” as it differs from one monster to another. A trap cannot capture a beast by itself, so moving on to our subsequent vital item.

4. Tranq Bombs

The Forever Sleep

Usually, monsters tend to flee or become dormant when they’re on the verge of death, offering you an unusual chance to conclude the chase in a distinct manner.

If you confine the slumbering beast in either a Pitfall or Shock Trap, you can swiftly conclude the chase by detonating two Tranquilizer Bombs near it, resulting in a ‘capture’ rather than a fatal outcome. Opting for captures in such situations is a prudent choice when your team is low on revival items or running out of time.

Remember, you can only capture trapped monsters once they are weak enough to run and sleep.

If you’ve tried using Tranq Bombs in the past, they won’t have any effect. Breaking this habit can be challenging if you’re a returning player, but by pre-doubling the tranquilizer on the monster before dropping the trap, you can achieve an immediate capture.

3. Dung Pods

Better Than They Smell

The life of a hunter isn’t a glorious one, and many tasks are dirty and dangerous.

Gathering excrement for your slingshot may not be the most pleasant task, but trust me, when you need it, you’ll appreciate having monster droppings at hand.

Throwing dung at any monster causes them to immediately depart from the area. This object is incredibly useful whenever an unexpected intruder appears during a hunt, as even skilled hunters often find it difficult to tackle two monsters simultaneously.

Able to drive off any monster by hurling dung at them, this item proves indispensable when dealing with unwanted guests during a hunt, as even the most accomplished hunters may struggle to confront two monsters at once.

Simply lure a monster away with feces, then pause for a moment, and it will likely move into an adjacent area.

In essence, if you prefer not to wait for the duo to part ways, which might take some time, you could employ a strategy that works swiftly – using ‘explosive devices’ that detonate almost instantly. These can be useful in drawing your target out of an unfavorable location.

2. Large/Mega Barrel Bombs

The Rude Awakening

As a fan, I’d say you have the freedom to employ Barrel Bombs whenever suits you during a hunt, but they truly excel in a tactic known as ‘sleepbombing.’ You can place both Large and Mega Barrel Bombs on the ground, and they explode upon being struck.

Since the team isn’t taking any damage, you have the opportunity to strategically position explosive devices near a slumbering beast and subsequently trigger them for significant damage infliction. This tactic, known as sleep bombing, is effective because it allows you to attack the monster with your weapon concurrently with the explosion.

It’s best to have a powerful character, such as one who uses a Greatsword, detonate the bombs, but the explosion deals damage regardless, so there’s no concern about the monster avoiding the attack.

1. Lifepowder

‘Our’ Healing Items

LifePowder operates in a manner similar to potions, yet it stands out due to a significant distinction that explains its restricted carrying capacity of only three units at a time.

LifePowder offers an immediate boost of healing not just for you, but for any nearby explorers as well. In case you see your fellow adventurer in distress, this could be very useful. Alternatively, you might opt to use it when a monster launches an Area of Effect attack, potentially impacting several players.

You can prepare LifePowder by blending a Godbug with a Blue Mushroom. However, we’ll save the discussion on its advanced variant for more advanced gameplay scenarios.

In many situations, we encounter inexperienced or hasty players charging headlong towards monsters without a proper strategy. LifePowder is one of your limited resources to ensure such impulsive hunters survive the encounter.

Even though “Wilds” might be all the rage currently, if you’re just diving into the series, you’ll find that “Worlds” has never been better and continues to sell exceptionally well even years following its initial release.
