In 1991, Gene, aged 95, and Betsy, aged 64, chose to get married and subsequently decided to lead a less public life after Gene retired from acting.
In my recent reflections, I find myself pondering over the impact and enduring value of one of my iconic roles – “A French Connection” – as expressed in a 2021 email interview with the New York Post. Despite maintaining a relatively quiet public profile in the latter years of my life, this role remains a significant part of my cinematic journey, which began way back in 2004 with my last on-screen appearance in “Welcome to Mooseport”.
Gene, who moved to Santa Fe in the 1980s and left Hollywood behind, mentioned this during an earlier interview. He shared that it had been over fifty years since he last watched the movie, which was screened for the first time in a dimly lit, compact viewing room within a post-production company’s premises. As for the film’s impact or enduring legacy, Gene is unsure. Despite this, it’s worth noting that the actor, who bagged his first of two Academy Awards for his role as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in the 1971 movie, also acknowledged, “That film undeniably boosted my career, and I am thankful for it.
