For about five years now, Windows Phone has been out of commission. Support for it concluded in early 2020, so anything that still functioned afterwards was essentially a roll of the dice. It seems that the odds are running out, as the Microsoft Store app has ceased to operate effectively starting from this week.
For quite some time now, the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 Mobile has been less than ideal. With the introduction of Windows 11, numerous apps in the store are not suitable for the discontinued mobile operating system. Additionally, it still employs the outdated layout from the web-based Windows 10 app store, which is infamously slow.
As a researcher, I’ve noticed that the current version of the store seems to be experiencing some issues, as it only displays a white screen when attempting to access an app’s download page. Granted, there weren’t many apps available in the first place, but now, it appears that the official storefront is no longer operational, leaving no viable source for acquiring the few remaining apps that once existed.
It’s regrettable that although the back-end systems responsible for app downloads and updates are functioning correctly, unfortunately, since the user interface (front-end) is now offline and web-based, users can no longer initiate the download process for apps.
For future app installation on Windows 10 Mobile, it’s expected that users will need to manually install apps (known as sideloading). Keep in mind, though, that you’ll have to find the apps yourself since there are few new UWP apps being developed currently. This may lead you to older and potentially outdated apps.
It’s quite remarkable that the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 Mobile has persisted for so long, considering it’s been running on a platform that Microsoft stopped supporting more than five years back. In truth, Windows 10 Mobile was obsolete as a daily-use platform well before support for it even ceased.
In the past few months, essential applications like Mail, Calendar, and OneDrive have experienced issues, possibly due to the company choosing to discontinue their development on Windows desktop platforms and instead focusing on the subpar new Outlook application. Similarly, OneDrive has encountered problems with certain features, such as uploading files and photos, within its app.
If you’re sticking with a Windows 10 Mobile phone for some reason, it might be past due to switch. You could opt for budget-friendly Android phones that perform significantly better than your outdated Windows 10 Mobile device. It may be worth exploring this option. Alternatively, an iPhone could also be a choice worth considering.

This enables you to synchronize notifications and photos from your Android or iPhone devices right onto your computer. You’ll be able to view recent text messages and notifications directly on your PC, enhancing productivity and convenience.
Over the past few years, Microsoft has made efforts to rejoin the smartphone industry by launching two Android models, the Surface Duo and the Surface Duo 2. However, these phones faced the same fate as Windows Phone did, eventually being discarded at a time when they were gaining traction.
Despite Microsoft discontinuing support for the Surface Duo dual-screen phones, these devices can continue to be functional for several years due to Android’s open nature. Since most, if not all, modern Android applications are compatible with the Surface Duo, a device that was released five years ago, users should still find a good number of apps functioning smoothly on their devices.
In the past few years, Microsoft has decided to let go of several innovative projects that were aimed at pushing boundaries, such as Windows Mixed Reality, HoloLens, and its simplified mobile app platform called UWP (Universal Windows Platform). Additionally, they have ceased their efforts on integrating Android apps into Windows. Essentially, Microsoft appears to no longer be pursuing the development of mobile devices running on Windows, instead choosing to focus on improving experiences that cater to traditional PC designs.
