This year, a fresh take on the beloved story “The Hunger Games” is scheduled to arrive, but it might not align completely with fans’ expectations. The last movie from the “Hunger Games” series to hit theaters was 2023’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”, a prequel to the original trilogy that followed a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a female tribute from District 12. However, there are numerous other projects in development related to “The Hunger Games”, such as a stage play that is preparing for its premiere this fall.
On October 20th, Lionsgate has scheduled the premiere of “The Hunger Games: On Stage” at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre in London’s financial district. This new theater has a capacity of 1,200 seats and operates in-the-round style. Five-time Tony nominee Conor McPherson is directing this stage adaptation of the first book and movie from “The Hunger Games” series, while Matthew Dunster will be at the helm.
The stage production of “The Hunger Games,” titled “The Hunger Games: On Stage,” is brought to you by Oliver Royds, Tristan Baker, and Charlie Parsons from Runaway Entertainment, in collaboration with Isobel David and Umeda Arts Theater, all under the agreement with Lionsgate.
Suzanne Collins, the creator and author of “The Hunger Games,” expressed her excitement about the play being developed by talented playwright Conor McPherson and director Matthew Dunster. She praised Conor’s exceptional adaptation which is noticeably different from the original screenplay. Additionally, she appreciated Matthew’s innovative and lively staging that offers a fresh perspective for the audience to engage with the story.
As a cinephile, I’d express it like this: Conor McPherson has skillfully transferred the depth and intensity from the book and movie into a play that reflects his signature style of tension and danger. He respects the young spirit of Katniss Everdeen and places her at the heart of the story. For over a year, we’ve been refining our theatrical language with our exceptional creative team to deliver an experience as gripping and innovative as Suzanne Collins’ novel and as captivating and exhilarating as the film. However, we aim to make our Hunger Games production uniquely theatrical – something that can only be experienced live on stage. We want our adaptation to be a theatrical event unlike any other.
In my role as a father to a teenager, there’s something incredibly rewarding about contributing to a tale that resonates with young people during these turbulent times. The story’s themes of resilience and moral courage truly strike a chord. Our priority is to pay tribute to Suzanne Collins’ work by creating an adaptation that mirrors the excitement found in the book, yet transfers seamlessly to the stage.
Working on this production has been an exceptional journey, witnessing the development of its theatrical dialogue during intense workshops under the guidance of Matthew Dunster and choreographer Charlotte Broom. Their innovative collaboration with a dedicated group of young performers has resulted in a remarkable evolution of the show’s language.
Jenefer Brown, EVP and Head of Global Products and Experiences at Lionsgate, expressed her pride in stating that ‘The Hunger Games’ is one of the finest book-to-movie adaptations ever made, stirring audiences to ponder deeply about their surroundings and the resilience of human spirit. We are thrilled to now present this gripping tale, its memorable characters, and immersive world on stage in this new captivating installment,” she added.
Tristan Baker and Oliver Royds, co-CEOs and founders of Troubadour Theatres expressed: “Bringing ‘The Hunger Games’ to our stage is a remarkable occasion, one that necessitates an exceptional team and setting. This uniquely designed theatre offers the ideal habitat for Panem, enabling our talented crew to generate an immersive, thrilling production that accurately embodies Suzanne Collins’ universe. Each aspect, from the stage design to the technology, has been meticulously crafted to immerse audiences deeper into the Games than ever before.
The upcoming “Hunger Games” movie will be a prequel tied to Suzanne Collins’ forthcoming novel, titled “The Hunger Games: Dawn of the Reaping“. The book is scheduled for release on March 18th, followed by the film premiere on November 20, 2026.
