Writer Deniz Camp called Absolute Martian Manhunter a “radical reinvention” of the DC Absolute line so far, and after seeing the first preview of Camp and artist Javier Rodriguez’s first issue, we can’t help but agree. While the next wave of Absolute books are all mysterious in their own way, Martian Manhunter is by far the series we know the least about, though Camp shared a few details in an interview with CBR. We know that John Jones is now bound to an alien as a result of an explosion from a terrorist attack, and now they are both attempting to discover who was behind the attacks while also learning to live together in the same body. During the interview, Camp mentioned drawing inspiration from the initial tales of Martian Manhunter penned by Joseph Samachson, Jack Miller, and Joe Cerda in Detective Comics. He plans to incorporate some of the dark, atmospheric, and supernatural aspects that were prevalent in those early stories.
Camp stated that we’ve truly excelled because although our work is unique and unconventional, it draws inspiration from the early Detective Comics stories and the character of Martian Manhunter. This version of the character was enigmatic and possessed a certain mystical quality in his abilities, being able to accomplish seemingly anything required by the story, and his viewpoint on humanity held great significance.
Camp shared his fondness for Ostrander’s Martian Manhunter run and particularly enjoyed the work by Orlando/Rossmo and Rob Williams. As a long-time DC fan and admirer of the character, he wanted to create something fresh but also draw inspiration from the initial, peculiar detective story feel. Despite being an FBI agent in this tale, the approach for this project will still follow that unique, early detective story model.
In the beginning, Scott mentioned that the top five characters were already taken, so he inquired if there was any DC character for which I had a unique pitch. After thinking about it, I wrote a proposal and sent it to him, which included Javi’s artwork, stating that we needed someone similar to Javier Rodriguez.
According to Camp, the idea wouldn’t have been effective without someone of his caliber involved, as it simply won’t function with any artist. He was crucial to the book because his approach to creating a psychedelic and trippy narrative that is also clear and not confusing was indispensable. In fact, his philosophies significantly influenced the way the story was crafted.
