I, as a fan and voice actor for Howard the Duck in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, can attest that his appearance in “Guardians of the Galaxy” was an exciting surprise. However, it’s important to understand that while he may not lead his own project anytime soon, he thrives in making cameo appearances like in titles such as “Guardians of the Galaxy.” In a recent interview with ComicBook for my work on “Robot Chicken,” I shared my experiences playing Howard and confirmed there were no plans to expand his role significantly. I believe that Howard’s charm lies in his brief appearances, making him a beloved character without necessarily needing to be the main focus.
Green commented that Howard seamlessly fits into the Marvel’s Guardians universe. It was an ideal moment to catch up with him. Additionally, we’ve created several episodes exploring different scenarios in the What If…? series, and it has allowed us to do some exciting things. Howard is a humorous character, one who can shine without needing his own main role. His humor is unique, and we’re still figuring out where he works best for a broad audience.
Initially appearing in Marvel Comics back in 1973, Howard the Duck later graced our movie screens in 1986, with George Lucas as the producer. This movie adaptation, considered one of the worst comic book adaptations, was met with severe criticism upon its debut, earning just $38 million globally against a production cost ranging from $30-37 million. It even won several Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture. Since then, Howard the Duck hasn’t starred in any movie or TV series again.
In a post-credits scene for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Howard made his initial appearance within the Collector’s museum. Subsequently, the character popped up in the subsequent two Guardians of the Galaxy films and even featured in the “Avengers: Endgame” where he was among those who arrived to aid the Avengers during the Portals scene.
In spite of Howard the Duck’s popular image, there’s a wealth of potential in this character. A contemporary remake could breathe new life into the property by exploiting its satirical elements, offering viewers an amusing twist on the overused superhero theme. With the right artistic minds at work, a revamped Howard the Duck film or series could rejuvenate the MCU by being uniquely different. As Green hints, this wouldn’t be a simple adaptation to accomplish. There’s a significant contrast between occasional appearances in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (where he fit seamlessly due to the movies’ comedic tone) and building an entire project around him. Selling Howard the Duck to casual audiences might be challenging, particularly since his popularity peaked decades ago in the ’70s.
Given James Gunn’s leadership at DC Studios, it appears unlikely that another Guardians of the Galaxy film featuring Howard the Duck will be produced. Since the end of “What If…?” after three seasons, fans may have bid farewell to Howard. However, his absence on Marvel’s upcoming slate seems justified, unless he reappears in a cameo for “Secret Wars.” After the Multiverse Saga ends, there might be discussions about a fresh Howard the Duck movie or series. Such a move would be risky, but could yield significant rewards if executed skillfully.
