Doctor Strange’s Shocking Move: Asgard’s New Sorcerer Supreme?

In a shift from being Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange isn’t restricted to ruling over just one realm. The climax of the Marvel vampire series “Blood Hunt” saw Doctor Doom deceiving Stephen Strange into surrendering the title of Sorcerer Supreme. This decision’s consequences are being explored in the ongoing storylines such as “One World Under Doom” and related comics, including Doctor Strange’s new series. Having used his newly-acquired powers to save the world, Doctor Doom now aims to dominate it. Unwilling to accept defeat lightly, Doctor Strange is now embarking on a mission to reclaim what was taken from him. His initial destination is Asgard, home of Thor.

In this issue #1 of “Doctor Strange of Asgard,” penned by Derek Landy, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, and Cory Petit from VC, we find Doctor Strange making an appearance in the realm of Asgard, home to Thor, the All-Father. Upon his arrival, Thor warmly greets him with a heartfelt embrace, “Welcome, Doctor Stephen Strange!” he says. It turns out that Strange has come seeking employment, as being the Sorcerer Supreme of Midgard wasn’t enough for him; he also served as Earth’s steward, ensuring magic remained in balance. However, on Asgard, the need for magical vigilance is even more pressing, making it an ideal place for a Sorcerer Supreme. Thus, Strange proposes that Asgard should have its own Sorcerer Supreme, and he wants to fill that role himself.

Thor informs Doctor Strange that Asgard has always relied on Skalds rather than a Sorcerer Supreme. Loki, the last Skald, was banished from Asgard in issue #15 of “Immortal Thor.” With Loki absent, there might be a growing necessity for a Sorcerer Supreme. If this role appeals to Doctor Strange, he needs to seek approval from Hulda, the authority on magic in Asgard. Should she bestow her approval upon him, then he can pursue his goal.

Thor invites Doctor Strange to stay in his quarters if he wishes, but Doctor Strange politely refuses. In order to understand and blend the sorcery of Asgard with that of Earth, he feels it necessary to immerse himself deeply. And for that, he believes living in a palace won’t suffice.

In the unexpected turn of events, Landy remarked that “Suddenly we find ourselves in uncharted territories. Not only is Doctor Strange now immersed in Asgardian society on a grassroots level, but he’s also found himself entangled in a murder case, which seems to be inconveniently interrupting his schedule.” when the news of Doctor Strange of Asgard was made public.

Magno stated, “When asked to illustrate ‘Doctor Strange from Asgard,’ I envisioned the reader experiencing the sorcerer surrounded by the dazzling and enchanting grandeur of Asgard with its towering statues and extraordinary architecture. This time around, it turns out that Derek Landy and I will take the reader on a journey into the grim side of Thor’s homeland—showcasing it realistically with all its unglamorous aspects, revealing the dark, chilling, and snow-covered back alleys, and hinting at the evil lurking in the shadows.

In the first issue of “Doctor Strange of Asgard,” we find that Doctor Doom has deceived Doctor Strange, causing him to relinquish the title of Sorcerer Supreme. With Doom now ruling the world, Stephen Strange grapples with an identity crisis and seeks purpose – perhaps even revenge. He travels to Asgard in search of a new calling, hoping that Thor’s realm might need a new Sorcerer Supreme. Loki offers assistance, but it comes with a malicious twist, leading Strange to understand that claiming the top magical position in Asgard will be more complex than he anticipated. Derek Landy (INFINITY WATCH) teams up with Carlos Magno (CAPTAIN AMERICA) to take Doctor Strange on a thrilling and ambitious journey!
