Clint often filmed rehearsals, which added to the intensity. Acting with Gene in such a scenario, knowing that on my other side was the formidable presence of Richard Harris… I simply couldn’t miss it. I had to be present. I had to give it my all.
Rubinek added, “Gene raised the standard so effortlessly, it slipped past my notice entirely. He made it seem simple. The scene in the movie was actually our first rehearsal, captured on film. I’ll always cherish the moment of sharing breath with him. Although we lost a remarkable talent, his work remains for us to revisit forever.
In the realm of film criticism, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside two titans in our industry – Gene Hackman and the late, legendary Robin Williams, on the hilarious production of “The Birdcage”. Reflecting on my experience, I must confess that Gene Hackman was, without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite actor. I made it a point to express this admiration towards him every day we shared the set.
Working so closely with him allowed me to truly appreciate why he’s considered one of the greats. His performances were never contrived; they felt genuine and heartfelt.
