For quite some time, it’s been known that the version of Doctor Who’s first season episode “Dalek,” penned by Robert Shearman, might have taken a completely different shape. This is because there was a copyright matter related to the permission for using the Daleks in the production.
Currently, the author is sharing insights into an alternative take on the episode, humorously referring to it as “The Daleks’ Absent Episode.
In a recent interview with Doctor Who magazine, Shearman expressed his thoughts about the revised script: “I thought it was quite enjoyable actually. The monster in Van Statten’s enclosure transformed into this enigmatic sphere, appearing suddenly to obliterate the Time Lords. The distress the Doctor experienced was due to never discovering their true identity.
In a moment I can’t forget, the Doctor was compelled to end its life to protect Rose. As it breathed its last, he held it tenderly, pleading for it to reveal its nature. But the sphere simply replied, “No, I won’t.
In series 3, it was Russell T. Davies’ concept that these entities, later discovered to be human heads encased in a sphere, represented the future of humanity. He named them the Toclafane.
Shearman went on to say: “Dalek turned out superior to my other versions, thankfully, we secured the rights in the end.
In the third season’s episode titled “The Sound of Drums,” the Toclafane made their debut. In the subsequent episode, “Last of the Time Lords,” it was unveiled that these beings from the future, whom we had seen in Utopia, were actually enslaved humans under the control of the Master.
One of the most cherished episodes featuring Christopher Eccleston’s brief stint as The Doctor is “Dalek.” During his single season on the series, he transformed into a new incarnation of the character following 13 episodes.
Nevertheless, the actor initially vacated the role but later resumed it in Big Finish audio plays. More recently, there has been an announcement that he will act alongside Billie Piper again, this time in a new series of audio dramas detailing further escapades of the Ninth Doctor alongside Rose.
Eccleston expressed his joy about resuming recordings for the Ninth Doctor alongside Billie, saying, “I feel ecstatic to continue creating new stories for the character with her. I believe my Doctor lacks existence without Rose.
This alien character is more of a solitary figure, often portrayed alone in stories like those from Big Finish. However, when paired with someone, such as Billie as Rose, there’s an incredible strength, courage, and deep understanding that emerges. That’s why I enjoy writing these characters together – they complement each other perfectly.
