Qatar Airways is speaking out.
Following Australian pair Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin disclosing that they endured a four-hour journey next to a deceased passenger on a flight from Melbourne to Doha, the airline explained that their crew adhered to established procedures in response to the unfortunate incident where a passenger suddenly passed away.
The airline confirmed that affected passengers were moved to other seats, and a crew member remained with the deceased passenger throughout the flight until arrival in Doha. This action was consistent with their training and adheres to standard industry practices, as stated by Qatar Airways to People magazine on Feb 28th.
The airline stated that their crew handled the challenging incident with utmost respect and decency, offering compensation and assistance not only to the family of the deceased woman but also to other passengers significantly impacted by the events onboard.
TopMob News has reached out to Qatar Airways for comment and has not yet heard back.
According to the airline, their account of what happened is different from that of the couple, who say they were not given any assistance after being instructed to shift seats to accommodate the deceased woman’s body. This body was later placed in Ring’s old seat and covered with a blanket.
They mentioned that they were informed they weren’t allowed to move from their seats for the rest of the journey, even though they were sitting beside a deceased person and there were vacant seats available elsewhere on the plane.
On A Current Affair, Ring stated after the event, “I noticed some empty seats nearby. It’s hard for me to comprehend that we were asked to remain… it wasn’t a pleasant situation.
In simpler terms, he emphasized that they have a responsibility to both their customers and employees to provide care. He suggested reaching out to them if there’s a need for assistance or guidance, whether it’s emotional support or counseling. Furthermore, he mentioned that he was unsure of his feelings and desired to speak with someone to ensure his well-being.
As for Colin, she said the entire situation has left her “traumatized.”
I, deeply saddened by the recent incident, have shared my heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family through a public statement on behalf of Qatar Airways.
Initially, our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the passenger who tragically lost their life during our flight. We regret any trouble or upset this unfortunate event might have caused, and we’re currently reaching out to our passengers according to our standard protocols and practices.
