In the expansive and enigmatic realm of “One Piece”, the narrative unfolds as a solitary pirate embarks on a maritime voyage in search of the fabled treasure known as “One Piece”. Legend has it that the King of Pirates, Gol D. Roger, amassed all the world’s treasures in one location prior to his execution. Whoever manages to claim this fortune can keep it for themselves. Twenty years ago, Roger’s last utterances marked the start of the Great Pirate Age, inspiring multitudes to embark on their own seafaring adventures. Two decades later, Monkey D. Luffy follows suit and sets sail on this epic quest.
The story initially appears as an upbeat journey, but gradually reveals the hidden truths about the world. In the vast cast of characters that populate One Piece, many are overlooked, particularly those who debut early on. Among these underestimated figures is Doctor Kureha, Chopper’s mentor. What viewers might not realize is that she secretly shares a fandom with the famous Harry Potter series. The creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, subtly acknowledged the renowned youth fantasy franchise through one of the less recognized characters – Dr. Kureha.
In Drum Castle’s room, it seems that One Piece, Harry Potter, The Shining, America, and Queen are all established parts of this universe. It’s possible they’re just a humorous reference, but I can’t help but ponder if they’re somehow leftovers from the original world, laughing out loud at the thought! (Feel free to point out any additional references you might find!)

Kureha Has Many Special Books in Her Library Apart From Harry Potter
In the 153rd chapter, Kureha’s library showcases a Harry Potter book among its collection. Also visible are One Piece and The Shining books. Interestingly, both America and Queen, a renowned British rock band, are part of the One Piece universe. Eiichiro Oda often incorporates elements from mythologies, popular culture, and literature to enrich his story. Although these references may not significantly contribute to the plot, they add an enjoyable layer of detail.
Kureha is an individual who has lived for 141 years, first introduced when she was 139 years old, making her older than the late Professor Dumbledore, who passed away at the age of 115. She was initially brought up in Chapter 133, where Dalton spoke of peculiar aspects about her. On nights illuminated by the moon, she is known to travel through the sky on a sleigh and descend from a mountain. Numerous people have reported witnessing her arrival accompanied by an unusual creature, unlike anything they’ve ever encountered before.
Despite being the sole doctor left on Drum Island, she plays a crucial role in the community as people heavily depend on her. In the world of One Piece, Kureha is renowned for her exceptional medical skills, which to ordinary folks appear almost magical. Due to scarce resources for medicine during Wapol’s reign, she frequently descended from the mountains and employed unconventional methods to treat the people.
She too dwelled in a chilly, remote fortress atop the mountains, scarcely accessible to others. The locals often branded her a sorceress, echoing the Harry Potter narrative that revolves around magical beings. Yet, this labeling of women as witches is an age-old stereotype, frequently employed to denigrate educated or self-reliant females out of fear and misunderstanding.
Kureha isn’t a Typical Witch as People Claimed in One Piece
Contrary to what many people thought, she wasn’t a witch but rather an exceptionally gifted woman who lived through eras that ordinary humans did not. Kureha is Chopper’s mentor, someone he learned medicine from after Dr. Hiriluk passed away. Everything Chopper knows about medicine is due to her and his own diligence. Over the years, she came to care for Chopper deeply, much like a mother would, even addressing him as her son when he left the island with the Straw Hat Pirates. Kureha fulfilled Dr. Hiriluk’s lifelong dream by blanketing their snowy island in cherry blossoms.
In my own words, I’d say: “I’ve had to part ways with Chopper for quite some time now, knowing full well that our paths might not cross again soon. Yet, in Chapter 906 of the Reverie Arc, there I was, sporting a t-shirt emblazoned with ‘100 berries,’ a nod to Chopper’s bounty. From afar, I keep abreast of any news about him, beaming with pride every time I hear he’s living the life I always dreamed for him – a pirate, with a bounty on his head, no less! Even if it’s relatively low, it’s a testament to his adventures and friendships. He’s out there sailing the seas, just as I had hoped he would.
